They continue to toy with me! All these Hollywood “powers-that-be” and their little behind-the-scenes talks continue to set my heart a-flutter. Here’s the latest: David Yates is still talking about making a Doctor Who feature film. Be still my blue box loving heart.
Yates is best known for bringing another gem of the United Kingdom to worldwide movie-going audiences as the director of the last four Harry Potter films, but this go around his plans have been dismissed by Steven Moffat. Moffat, the head writer and executive producer for the current Doctor Who series, addressed Yates’ first announcement of Doctor Who movie plans in December 2011 via Twitter:
To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.
David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet.
According to Radio Times,
The producer also revealed that as yet “there simply are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment” but “if and when the movie happens it will need to star television’s Doctor Who – and there’s only ever one of those at a time.
“Whatever happens, the BBC and BBC Worldwide will work together to ensure that we don’t just get a movie, we get the movie that everyone wants,” he added.
That was then. It sounded pretty solid. However, according to Bleeding Cool, David Yates has finally presented a rebuttal during an interview at the Warner Brothers Studio:
Yes, I’m definitely doing a Doctor Who movie. But I think where everyone got confused was that we’re not making it for five years, or six years – it’s a very slow development. I’ve got projects backed up between now and about 2015, and it’s something I’m very passionate and excited about.
Steven’s a genius. I love his work, I think he’s incredibly clever. I love what he’s done with Doctor Who, love his Sherlock Holmes. He’s such a gifted man. But this is something that’s a very slow burn and I’m hoping to sit down with him at some point and have a chat. It’s just something that we’ve been talking about for a little while.
When further probed about the movie plans and whether or not it would have any tie-ins to the current running show, Yates said,
That’s all to be discussed. Because it’s five or six years from now. It’s weird because … what will the series be like in five or six years? But I’m very excited about it, very excited about that world
Oh what is a Whovian to think? Yates said “definitely” and Moffat said “certainly NOT” either way it seems, as in all dealing with the Doctor, only time will tell.
Questions, my fellow Whovians!
Do you want to see your Doctor on the big screen?
Do you trust David Yates at the helm?
Would you prefer a tie-in or a completely “new” Doctor tale?
