At one point it was expected that two of 2016’s biggest blockbusters, Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse, would make their trailer debuts with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Collider reported it, we wrote about it, and never mind because the Apocalypse has come early. Check out the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse below.
There is A LOT to like in this trailer. Apart from the set of fans who think 2011’s First Class is the best X-Men movie (it’s a great movie btw), it can pretty much be agreed upon that Bryan Singer is the definitive X-Men director. He launched the franchise, he made the perfect sequel with X2: X-Men United (which is still a strange title), and after taking a break from the mutants he returned to make one of my favorites of last year, Days of Future Past.
Singer brings a gravitas to these movies not seen or felt in First Class or other superhero films. Singer doesn’t set out to make “comic-book movies,” he sets out to make a movie, period. Singer’s X-Men movies have been great works of sci-fi and fantasy filmmaking, they just happen to have superheroes in them. Apocalypse looks no different.
This time religious imagery is utilized to bring a villain to life who can literally end the world. Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) had a pretty shoddy premiere on and Entertainment Weekly cover. Maybe a character of this magnitude should not make his first appearance on a grocery store media magazine, because he looks great in this.
This will be the eighth X-Men film (counting the Wolverine films), and has been said to wrap up the “prequel trilogy.” Essentially, First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse will work as their own trilogy similar to the first three X-Men films with the “older” cast. As always, this cast is incredibly talented and it is strange to think all these high-profile actors keep returning to a comic-book franchise. James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender are all back and they are joined by a string of new/rebooted mutants.
Younger versions of Nightcrawler, Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and many others make appearances in the trailer. It looks as though Charles’ school for the gifted is finally operating as a school. The new group of X-Men will take on Apocalypse, who has wrangled four powerful mutants (Magneto possibly?) to be his four horsemen.
The trailer is just epic. You can tell because of the Inception horn. All joking aside, the X-Men franchise is perfect for a story of this caliber. While the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe still needs to ramp up their universe before audiences can accept a fight between Hawkeye and Thanos, X-Men and the mutants are well suited for a villain of this caliber.
X-Men: Apocalypse will be released on May 26, 2016. Official synopsis below:
“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”
