Transformers: Earth Wars is a free real-time strategy (RTS) mobile game that easily rivals its PC counterparts. With smooth animations, a vast character selection and sound effects straight from the movies and television shows, it is almost surreal that this is playable on a phone.
If you are a fan of Transformers then you have probably already guess this is another chapter in the long-fought war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. However, if you are new to the Transformers universe, the game does explain why the Autobots and Decepticons are from the planet Cybertron and that they have come to Earth looking for a powerful ore called Energon. Energon can be used to power weapons and various forms of technology. The Decepticons want to use the Energon to help them conquer Cybertron, while the Autobots stand in defense against the Decepticons. It is up to you to decide on whether you side with the Autobots and defend the Earth, or join forces with the Decepticons and take over the world!
I played this on my iPhone 6S running iOS 9 and as stated above, it is hard to believe that this game is on a phone or tablet. The graphics are very detailed. The animations almost never lag and the sound effects are not distorted or garbled. Activating a transformation and hearing that classic sound sequence for the first time was oh-so-satisfying. Every character looks like it came right out of the show. Speaking of characters, there are a lot of them! Whether you roll out with the Autobots or the Decepticons, you will be collecting tons of Energon to unlock new characters.
Like most RTS games, you will be doing some multi-tasking. One of the things you will have to do is collect alloys and Energon. Doing this will allow you to build new and more powerful facilities. Each facility has a specific job, like the Space Bridge which unlocks new characters and transports them to Earth from Cybertron. When you are not gathering supplies, you can take your squad and complete various missions. Before each mission, you will be able to choose different characters to handle the fight. Each character has a unique set of attacks and special abilities, so choose wisely. During these battles, you can command your squad to attack as a group, or choose an individual to use a special ability, such as an air strike that damages multiple enemies. After each mission is complete, you squad will earn experience points and level up to become more powerful. Upon returning to your Base, you can then use the materials you gained from battle to upgrade facilities and prepare for the next mission.
As I stated before, I played this on the iPhone 6S with a 4.7 inch display. While the game looks amazing on this device, I often had a hard time controlling it. There is a lot of information on the screen and it can be a bit overwhelming. The command buttons are grouped together and making precise taps in a hurry is not always easy. There were also many times where I would try to have my squad attack an area of an enemy base loaded with defense turrets, and they would attack a completely different area. You can also visit another player’s game and help. I am not sure if it were an issue on my end, or if the servers were overwhelmed from large numbers of players, but I was not able to make a successful connection.
Transformers: Earth Wars – The Verdict
From the way it looks and sounds to the wide amount of characters, this is a game I had a hard time putting down. Even with the screen being a little cluttered and not being able to play with others, this is still a very fun game and easily makes you lose track of time while playing it. Plus, it is free! Although you can purchase upgrade packages, there did not seem to be much of a need to do this. If you are a fan of RTS games and Transformers, you should give Transformer: Earth Wars a chance! You can get it from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
