Time Warner CEO Promises Lightness in DC Comics Superheroes

Let there be light!

DC Comics fans have been torn into two sides those that like the grim tone of the new DC Cinematic Universe and those who would prefer everything to be a little lighter. Deadline reports that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes has now promised DC fans that moving forward, the DC Universe heroes from Time Warner will have “more lightness” than what people saw in this years Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad.

CEO Time Warner (TWX) "In the first stage of the financial crisis, the government's priority has been to supply credit and lower interest rates in order to address fears of illiquid or insolvent financial institutions. This policy needs to be coordinated with overseas monetary authorities. The next stage will be recession in most countries. That will require fiscal stimulus, the form of which will vary by country, and in the U.S. may best be targeted as aid to the states, many of whose constitutions force spending cuts in downturns. Given our lower debt levels and the world's willingness to hold U.S. Treasuries, the U.S. can afford fiscal stimulus more than many emerging economies. But for all this to work, it's very important that U.S. policies don't restrict international trade or investment."

Finding Balance for the DC Universe

While talking to the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference Bewkes mentioned why they came up with this solution. He said “this is the part where we say ‘pay no attention to the critics’,” but acknowledged that “we do think there’s a little room for improvement.”

He reiterated some of the things that we already knew, like the fact that Warner Bros has added some executives, including DC’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, “to oversee not just the movie applications we do” but also things like the DC-related TV shows (Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, iZombie, Gotham, etc) and of course the consumer products lines.

On the Right Course

Those who wanted something lighter will likely be pleased at Bewkes announcement, but that does not mean that all is lost for those who liked the grittier tone of the DC Universe. When asked about Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman, Bewkes said “these movies were very successful in the strategic aims and financial aims we had for them. They helped to reinvigorate moviegoers’ interest in the characters. So the strategy worked. The execution did deliver what we wanted….What you shouldn’t take away is that you should be worried about this. We’re actually more optimistic about it than we were….We’re right on course, or better.”

This effort to bring  a lighter side to the DC Universe while still acknowledging the success of the current trend is promising. How do you feel about Bewkes comments? Do you like the current tone of the DC Comics films or do you feel they should lighten up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
