Variety is reporting that Ben Affleck is stepping down as director of The Batman.  Affleck gave the following statement after the announcement was made.

Ben Affleck Out as Director of The Batman“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions.  Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Sources say the decision was mutually decided and it has nothing to do with the poor performance of Ben’s latest film Live By Night, in which he starred and directed.

“Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life,” the studio said a statement.

The task begins now on finding a director for the solo project with War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves rumored to be on the shortlist.

Rumors have been floating around for several weeks that Ben was considering backing out of directing The Batman so that he could focus more on delivering the best performance possible.  He had also commented on how annoying it had been being constantly asked how the film was progressing.

With Affleck’s work completed on Justice League, due for release this November, The Batman was set to begin production this summer.  There is no word yet if this will delay the start of the film.

Fans are no doubt now beginning to question Ben’s commitment to The Batman or whether it will even be made.  Ben has been a strong supporter of his solo Batman film, having co-written the script with DC Comics’ Geoff Johns.
