On a wet and dreary Saturday, people gathered at the LeGrand Center in Shelby, North Carolina for Shelby Comic Con. Now in its second year, the small town of Shelby is now hosting a wonderful up and coming new event for nerds from all around the area. Nestled about 40 miles from Charlotte, NC the town of Shelby is the home of the Cleveland County Fair that attracts attendees from all around the state every fall. Now the quaint little town of Shelby now attracts comic book and other pop culture fans.
The Word of the Nerd event team traveled west from Charlotte for our very first Shelby Comic Con. And although the weather was damp and cloudy, you would never know it by the great vibes coming from our fellow con-goers. For only being in its second year, this con had an impressive vendor room, a nice array of creators, a Pokemon tournament, and a cosplay contest. In fact, our very own Nina Budd took second place in the adult category with her Warrior Poison Ivy cosplay.
If there was anything negative to say about this event, it would be that the absence of special guests and the low number of indie artists and writers made it difficult to make this an all-day event for congoers. Certainly, the number of creators cannot be pinned entirely on the organizers of this con. For only being a second-year event, what they were able to put together was impressive. Shelby Comic Con is well on its way to being a top-tier event for the area.
