About Colossal Smidgen Cosplay

Colossal Smidgen Cosplay.  Friends call me: Smidge (because I’m just a Smidge).  I’m a waitress in Orlando, FL working on making cosplay my full time job!

How did you first get into cosplay?

I first got into cosplay about five months ago, but I hit the ground running! My friend convinced me to be the Short Round to his Dr. Jones at the first convention I ever went to, Anime Festival Orlando, and I had SO MUCH fun. And then I found out you could have cosplay as a legitimate job, so I decided I’m not stopping until it’s my life.

How much time do you spend making your costumes?

Depends on the costume. I’m starting to get into worbla crafting so that’s making things go more slowly.

What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far?

My favorite is my sith lord because I have NEVER felt more badass than when I was in that costume with two light sabers in my hands.

Do you usually get positive reactions from fans?

Yeah, so far pretty much everything has been exceedingly positive! I’ve had SUCH an overwhelming quick response to my cosplay in such a short amount of time, that it really makes me think I can actually do this as more than just a hobby!

What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for?

I’m working on my Jyn Erso costumes right as I type this! I’ve been told A BILLION times that I look JUST like her, so I’m doing something super special that I’ve never done!

What characters inspire you the most?

Any badass female character! They really bring out my intense ferocity (for a tiny person)

What is your primary area of inspiration for your cosplay?  Comics, anime, games or other?

Really anything. I watch a movie or play a game and decide I REALLY like a character or their outfit and want to be them. There is no real rhyme or reason to it for me.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Joannes, Walmart, and Home Depot!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give new cosplayers?

Just jump right into it! Don’t dawdle and make up excuses as to why you can’t just get started. Start just one cosplay and finish it. Then see what happens. Trust me: it’s awesome.

What’s your golden rule of cosplay?

Don’t let IMGUR comments get you down.

What does your budget run per costume?

Wait…. you’re supposed to BUDGET?!? I thought I was just supposed to spend every last penny on cosplay, and then hope I can eat and pay bills.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Not a single thing.

If money and time were not issues, what’s your number one over ambitious cosplay?

Lady Sauron! I would LOVE to be able to create that armor build!

Why do you cosplay?

I cosplay because portraying these characters helps with bringing myself to life. Outside of cosplay, I’m honestly super shy, at least I WAS before I started. But it’s really helped me be more outgoing and has made me want to strive to be a better me so I can portray the characters I want to better.
