TMNT #67 Story:

The turtle brothers are officially on their own. Without the guidance of their father Master Splinter, Leonardo officially is stepping up as the leader. He is finding it a title bit more difficult than he thought keeping his teenage brothers on the same page and motivated. Raphael just wants to lay low and chill out, Michelangelo wants to go be a superhero and Donnie just wants to mess with his machines. Leo is going to have to learn fast because trouble is brewing. On the other side of the city, Agent Bishop and the Earth Protection Force (EPF) has a new plan to take out the mutants around New York, City. The EPF may have found a way to control mutants and their first target is Slash.

TMNT Ongoing #67

The writers are doing a great job in constantly pushing the turtles in new directions. Without Master Splinter, Leo is finding it a little bit harder to lead once there is no real authority figure around. Leonardo has to search himself to figure out how to get his brothers to respect him and follow him. It is great introspective into his character in that fans have always known him as the leader but what happens when he truly is the head of the family? Calling back to TMNT Universe issues 1-4 with Agent Bishop and the EPF is great and makes the Universe feel that more connected. That being said there is a lot of dialogue boxes in this issue and a vast amount of explanation by the characters. This is a setup issue for the new arc so there is a lot of explanation of what characters are doing and why. It can be a little overwhelming when some panels are almost completely covered in dialogue explaining a situation. Other than that it is a nice set up to a new arc.

Art:

Mateus Santolouco is back on art duties to start this new story arc after Sophie Campbell had a great one-shot last issue concerning Alopex. Santolouco has a very detailed, energetic art style that really pops off the page. He has some great panel layouts and his sequential art of a building collapsing in the first few pages is a great piece of storytelling and framing action. This issue does have a lot of dialogue so Santolouco gets to show off that he can do more than bombastic action and he can still handle dramatic scenes equally as well. I love how Ronda Pattison colors the more violent scenes with dark oranges, yellows, and reds. The colors really make those scenes have the extra impact they need.

Conclusion:

TMNT Ongoing #67 sets up a new story arc for the series as the Turtles are officially on their own without Master Splinter to help or guide them. Leonardo is learning what it truly means to be a leader and that teenagers are truly hard to deal with. The Earth Protection Force is back and action and wants to rid New York of its mutant problem. With a new way to remotely control mutants their first target is Slash and with him under their control, they are coming for the Mutanimals and the Turtles next! This is a good set up issue for the rest of the arc. There is a lot of dialogue and explaining of certain details that do bog down the flow of the story. The art continues to be spectacular, with a great cast of artist rotating in and out of this series. This looks to be another exciting arc in this series and now that the set-up is out of the way, it will be fun to see where it goes from here.
