About SaraCat Cosplay
I’m Sara, I’m 22 years old and I’m Italian. I’m at the first year of Intercultural Communication at University. I’m a cosplayer since 2012. I hope you’ll like my work ♥
How did you first get into cosplay?
I was very young when I went to my first convention, probably 12\13 years old, and there I discover cosplayer. I was very fascinated with them and so I asked questions of everyone, probably I have been hated by all for the number of questions I was asking. In this way, I discovered much of that hobby that day and I was so impressed that I bought my first wig just there because I wanted to become part of that world as soon as possible.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
At this time, as in the past, I think at cosplay just as a hobby, a way to have fun and make new friends
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I prefer to create the entire cosplay alone, although it is self-taught in dressmaking and in all other fields. I believe that there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a finished dress made entirely out of my hands!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
Usually little time because I start my projects always late and so I do all the work during the last few days at the conventions to which I have to take them. I find myself working on a dress intensively between 20 and 7 days.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Absolutely Merida from Brave (Disney)!!! I made the dress in only six days, it was a real difficult and tiring but this is the cosplay that gives me more satisfaction. It is also one of the characters that I love the most, I see myself there a lot, especially for the temperament. Along with Belle, Merida is my favorite princess.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
The best memory of the cosplay dates back to 2015 Lucca Comics. A little girl of 3 \ 4 years threw himself into my arms, saying that I was the real Anna Frozen, she came up to me in my arms and kissed me on the cheek saying to give one to Kristoff by her!
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love cosplaying with others, it is much more fun, in fact, I’m often in groups or couples!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
Right now I’m not working on any specific costume but I hope to be able to do before the end of the year another version of Merida, Raven from Teen Titans, Belle from Beauty and the Besat and Poison Ivy from Batman.
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
In the world of cosplay, there are no problems other any other area where there are many people. I try to always keep me out of this discussions\flame.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
Generally, I do a cosplay from movie or animation of Disney, also I love fantasy and pin-up style.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
Absolutely shopping for supplies, sewing, and photo shoots.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I generally don’t buy the material from the internet but in the shops that are in the area where I live. Instead, from the internet, I buy just wigs and colored contact lenses.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Surely the most difficult obstacle was learning to sew completely self-taught. There are many things I still have to learn it in this field.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
I discovered that I know how to do much more things than I could have imagined! I realized that if I really committed I can reach any goal.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
It does not matter how perfect your cosplay is, the most important thing is to have fun. Cosplay is fun!
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
I don’t find it so changed as many say, it is simply adding more and more people and now there are the same problems that exist in every hobby \ sports and others where there are many people.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Eowyn battle version from LOTR, Grand Duchess Anastasia, and Hermione at Yule Ball from HP.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
I never fixed a budget but I always try to spend as little as possible.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Thanks to cosplay now I’m less shy than when I was a teenager and I met great people many of which are now also my good friends. I never regret to have entered this world.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
I do not think of quitting never definitively with the cosplay but to seek characters suitable for the age that I will have. Obviously, everything can happen so I never know.
