Ego Meets The Guardians
The other night, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 trailer was unveiled by Chris Pratt. In it, Star-Lord/Peter Quill (Pratt) comes face to face with his father. This man, Ego, is played by Kurt Russell, and is known in the comics as Ego The Living Planet. What Ego’s role is in the movie and whether he’ll be opposed to the Guardians have yet to be revealed. It’s also unknown if Ego is actually a man or is still a planet.
Ego The Living Planet was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first appeared in Thor #132. This egotistical and sentient planet was apparently born when an alien scientist merged his consciousness with a planet. Usually malevolent, Ego has fought Thor, the Fantastic Four, and even Rom: Space Knight. With details for the movie under wraps, we do not know much more about Russell’s portrayal.
However, Ego is not Peter Quill’s father in the comics. In fact, he doesn’t factor into any of the three origins for Star-Lord. In the comics, as of 2013’s Guardians of the Galaxy #.01, and even earlier, it has been another person. J’son (originally Jason), the Emperor of Spartax is Star Lord’s father in the comics. Usually found opposing his son and the Guardians, J’son wants Peter to take his rightful place as prince and Star Lord of the empire. He was last seen trapped by the Collector (Benecio Del Toro’s character) following the “The Black Vortex” crossover event.
So far, most fans seem to be fine with the changes to canon, which is a rare situation. Usually, such a major departure from the comic canon is not met with warm reception. However, given the popularity of the Guardians franchise, and Marvel as a whole; people might be giving the benefit of a doubt on this one.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 arrived in theaters on May 5th.
