Game Of Thrones Season Seven Premiere Announced

On March 9th, Game of Thrones revealed the premiere date of the show’s seventh, and penultimate, season. The reveal started with a Facebook video, depicting a block of ice. With a digital torch and certain words, the Game of Thrones fans could melt the ice. After a couple appearances from stars and digital snafus, the date was unveiled. Variety reports that the show, which airs on HBO, will premiere on July 16th.

While the show usually premieres in April, the date was pushed back as the show needed certain weather. According to HBO Programming President Casey Bloys, “Now that winter has arrived on ‘Game of Thrones,’ executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual when the weather is changing.” Namely, icy cold weather as a great war approaches the realms of Westeros. Winter is not just coming, it is here. And with Cersei on the throne, Jon Snow taking his rightful place in Winterfell, and Daenerys on her way…all hell will also break loose.

The Game Of Houses Goes Round And Round

This announcement was accompanied by a new trailer for the show. In it, the various sigils of the Great Houses rise and fall with voiceovers from various characters. It becomes menacing when Cersei speaks: “Lannister, Targaryen, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell — they’re all just spokes on a wheel. This one’s on top, then that one’s on top, and on and on it spins. Crushing those on the ground.” Then, there is an ominous warning: “There’s only one war that matters: the great war. And it is here.”

The late premiere date will make this season ineligible for this year’s Emmys and Golden Globes. Game of Thrones was nominated for 23 Emmys last year and won 12, including Best Drama.

All fans now sit and wait for July 12th to come. While it may be hot here, the cold winds of war have come to Westeros.
