On March 22nd on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Woody Harrelson dropped a teaser for his role in the Young Han Solo film. During the interview, Harrelson downplays his part, more like not giving away spoilers, in the standalone Star Wars movie. He also goes on to say he is not a “fanatic” but it “was nice being a part of it”.

Who doesn’t want to be a part of Star Wars? Let’s look at Force Awakens and the number of celebrity cameos in that film. The biggest was Daniel Craig. He played the stormtrooper JB-007, an appropriate name, guarding Rey. At the time he was also filming Spectre and found time for a brief appearance in Star Wars. Even when Rey Jedi mind tricked him he was classic Daniel Craig.

Han Solo’s Mentor

Getting back to Woody Harrelson, we all know Star Wars actors can’t say much about their roles, for good reason. However, Harrelson casually tells Jimmy Fallon that he plays a guy named Beckett in the film. Beckett is a criminal and Han’s mentor. Then he goes on to talk about his other film projects. It is still worthy of mention because we now have a name and role. Does this have any significance in a certain former canon and prior Han Solo stories? Maybe.

In legends, a pirate named Garris Shrike raised a young Han Solo and taught him how to be a criminal. They eventually had a falling out. Despite this being a legends character we will have to see if any of these past stories influenced the writers.

Currently filming, the Han Solo movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Woody Harrelson as Beckett. Also featuring Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. The Lego Movie’s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing with screenplay by Jon Kasden and The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Lawrence Kasden.

Announced by Lucasfilm, the standalone Han Solo movie is set for a May 25, 2018, theatrical release. This is a significant date as Star Wars: A New Hope was released May 25th, 1977. Every Star Wars film until the Force Awakens also had a May release. Actually, 2018 is shaping up to be another movie year for fans of many franchises, not only Star Wars. December will see the release of Avatar 2 and Avengers: Infinity War to be released in May.

Stay tuned for more news surrounding the Young Han Solo film.
