“The idea of a teenage Dumbledore was simply odd, like trying to imagine a stupid Hermione or a friendly Blast-Ended Skrewt.” – Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
For many fans, the idea of a young Dumbledore seems foreign like we can never see him as more than an old man with a white beard, but that won’t be the case for much longer. Pottermore has announced that two-time Academy Award nominee, Jude Law, has been cast to play the famous wizard in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts.
Fantastic Brits and Where to Find Them
Of course, this isn’t the same Albus Dumbledore we know from the movies, or even the one from the books but rather the younger version long before he became the famous headmaster. From what we know and what has been released this is Dumbledore while he was still the Transfiguration professor for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
As we know from the Harry Potter lore, Dumbledore was a contemporary of Gellert Grindewald, the dark wizard from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He was mentioned in passing during the first film when it was revealed that Newt Scamander, the series’ main character, was expelled from Hogwarts and how Dumbledore had been the only one to argue against expelling him.
There’s also the fact that we know that in the latest editions of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Newt mentions that “Albus Dumbledore was something more than a schoolteacher to me,’ but to reveal more would breach the Official Magical Secrets Act as well as his former teacher’s confidence.” So there’s definitely more for Dumbledore to do in the Fantastic Beasts Sequel and we can’t wait to see what comes from it.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise will have five films, the sequel will begin filming this summer and it’s slated for release November 16, 2018.
