Powerless S01E06: “I’m a Friend You”

Three weeks ago on Powerless, Emily (Vanessa Hudgens) tried to encourage Teddy (Danny Pudi) to enter an invention competition. Meanwhile, Van (Alan Tudyk) bullied Ron (Ron Funches) into helping him placate a girlfriend’s teenager.

This Week on Powerless:

In this week’s episode of Powerless, Emily tried to bond with Jackie (Christina Kirk), despite the other’s noted reluctance. Meanwhile, Van tried to flush out the culprit to a crime with nebulous evidence and decided on Teddy, Ron, and Wendy (Jennie Pierson) as likely perpetrators. While these plotlines didn’t focus on the superhero-filled setting, they were still both engaging and funny. In addition, these plotlines focused on character issues that three of our main characters have. Emily has issues with boundaries (we saw this last episode as well), because she wants to be everyone’s friend, and sometimes she goes too far. Van thinks that he has the most power in his office, but he’s easily distracted and manipulated. Jackie thinks that she can do everything by herself, and while that’s true a lot of the time, it isn’t always true. Emily and Jackie arguably learned and improved throughout the episode, Van didn’t as much. Will Powerless ever let Van become more than a stagnant villainous character while the other characters improve around him?

In addition, we learn in the first minute of the episode that Crimson Fox is leaving Charm City for somewhere “Metropolis-adjacent,” which she reveals in a LeBron James-style press conference. Does this mean that we’re going to meet a new Charm City superhero? Or does this mean that Charm City will remain a city under siege by any C-List villain bored enough to terrorize this seemingly disliked city? Only time will tell.

Powerless (optimistically) airs on Thursday nights at 8:30/7:30 central. There is an episode scheduled to air next week, but that is apparently subject to change.
