Rumor: “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” to be cancelled?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

S.H.I.E.L.D. No More?

Editors Note: The following is speculation from a single source. ABC will announce their 2017-18 lineup on May 16.

As Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made its return to television screens this week, some are questioning how long the show will last. Some believe that the show, which is wrapping up its fourth season, is the verge of cancellation. When EW addressed these rumors to showrunner Jed Wheedon, he dismissed them, saying “We are going to make it a thrilling end regardless, but we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.”

While the show is supposed to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, literally reviving fan-favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) to do so, this hasn’t helped in ratings. The connections between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the MCU have been nominal at best. This has mainly been with tie in episodes that marginally connect to the greater MCU. As time has passed, the connection between film and television has stretched apart. While S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s first season was directly impacted by the films, now it seems to be in a totally separate universe. It has however introduced the Inhumans, which will be getting their own show later this year.

Hydra Triumphant?

On the show, Daisy and Jemma Simmons have dived into a digital realm called The Framework, where the rest of the agents are trapped. This digital world has undone the trapped agents’ regrets and they are in a blissful utopia. Problem is, their digital world is one where Hydra rules and S.H.I.E.L.D. is underground. Hydra is led by Madame Hydra, played by Mallory Jensen (Galavant). Whedon and co-producer Maurissa Tancharoen were very pleased with the villain choice. “Since we’re bringing back Hydra in the Framework, we thought we’d bring it back with a force to be reckoned with. Madame Hydra is a villain with the perfect combo of strength, sexy, and scary. We’ve thrown many challenges Mallory’s way and she’s always up for the task. We’re excited for fans to see how she makes Madame Hydra come to life.”

Will Daisy and Simmons be able to free Team S.H.I.E.L.D.? Will the Agents be back for another season of thrills, perhaps reconnecting with the Avengers in Infinity Wars.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday nights at 10/9 central on ABC.
