Supergirl season 2 promises to go out with a bang, bringing in heavy-hitting characters that we – unfortunately – haven’t seen in a while. That’s right: Superman and Cat Grant will be back in the show’s season finale.
Superman: Will Supergirl Provide Another Heroic Team Up?
Though Superman was often mentioned in Supergirl’s first season, it wasn’t until season 2 when we met the Man of Steel himself. Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin acquitted himself mightily as the hero and fared even better as Kara’s dorky cousin, Clark Kent.
In “The Adventures of Supergirl” and “The Last Children of Krypton,” Superman and the titular heroine teamed up to first save Lena Luthor from John Corben then save the city from a newly super-powered John Corben, i.e. Metallo.
The Man of Steel also took exception to the D.E.O. in his two appearances in season two because he thought they had mishandled their supply of Kryptonite. J’onn J’onzz managed to reconcile with Superman, and when the hero returned to Metropolis, he took the rest of the Kryptonite with him.
Supergirl has taken the opportunity to mention its hero’s famous cousin many, many times since he went back to Metropolis, but it was unclear if we’d able to see him again.
“We’re working on it. We’ll see. Hope springs eternal,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said when asked about future Superman appearances in October.
The production team seemed comfortable without bringing on Superman every week though. Kreisberg says the writers enjoyed the text messaging scenes between the cousins, noting, “That is how people communicate now, you know?”
But more importantly, the team knew it was important that Superman didn’t overshadow Supergirl.
“There was never an intention for this to be about him. It’s always about her. It’s called Supergirl, and Melissa has done such a great job,” Hoechlin said.
Now, with a full season between visits and permission to use the character, Superman can return.
Thanks to the amount of time Clark’s been gone, audiences will be excited to see him, and his episodes won’t feel like a gimmick designed to bring in viewers. Rather, Superman can once again support his heroic cousin.
Details about the finale’s plot are scarce, but hopefully, we’ll see another superhero team up.
Cat Grant: What Role Will She Play in the Supergirl Finale?
Similarly to Superman, Cat Grant ducked out of National City after the second episode of Supergirl’s second season.
That was, sadly, the price we paid for Supergirl’s continued presence on our television sets. If the CW hadn’t picked up the show, CBS likely would have been forced to cancel it. But because CW shows films in Vancouver and not Los Angeles, Calista Flockhart was unable to stick around, as she only takes acting jobs that allow her to stay near her family in LA.
Nonetheless, Ms. Grant stuck around for just long enough in season two to help her former assistant find her true calling: reporting. Then she decided to leave CatCo behind because she felt stagnant and wanted to move on. The new direction for the character was more or less handled well in her final scene in “The Lost Children of Krypton.”
In some ways, Lena Luthor stepped into the void Cat Grant left behind, as Kara’s new CEO friend, but it was clear from the get-go that Cat would be back. Kreisberg said the character’s return only hinged on Flockhart’s schedule.
It looks like – finally – the actress is free.
As with Superman’s plotline, details for Cat’s role in the finale are being kept tightly under wraps. It seems likely that Cat would want to check in with her business and her former assistant, but would that be satisfying to viewers?
Because Cat will only be around for two episodes, it’s hard to do anything like the tempting identity reveal because that should be a plot that sticks around for a while. It’ll be interesting to see how Supergirl walks the line between making Cat’s role in the episode worth bringing her back and knowing the character isn’t sticking around.
Both Superman and Cat Grant return in Supergirl’s two-episode finale, set for May 15 and May 22 on The CW. Whether either character will appear in the show’s upcoming third season remains to be seen.
