Unbreakable and Split Get a Sequel
NOTE: Spoilers abound for Unbreakable and Split
M. Night Shyamalan released information about his latest film via Twitter. The film, titled Glass, is the last installment in the Unbreakable trilogy.
The Rise and Fall of M. Night Shyamalan
In the year 2000, audiences were positive they met their generation’s Alfred Hitchcock. He was a screenwriter turned director named M. Night Shyamalan. His debut film, The Sixth Sense, earned a Best Picture nomination. His follow-up feature, Unbreakable, solidified him as a bold new voice in movie making. From there, Shyamalan fell from grace. In the middle chunk of the early 2000’s, his penchant for twist endings led audiences to view him as a one trick pony. So, he attempted to diversify. Unfortunately, his attempts to stretch himself as a director resulted in The Last Air Bender. After Earth, a failed sci-fi film starring Will Smith tanked at the box office. Things looked grim for M. Night. But, even at his most dire, fans had one question: “When is the sequel to Unbreakable going to happen?!”
The Unbreakable Saga Continues
After finding moderate success in a partnership with producer Jason Blum, Shyamalan released Split. The film was unleashed on an unsuspecting audience at Fantastic Fest and brought the house down. Every tweet from the event warned followers to avoid any spoilers before the film’s January 2017 release. So, when the film finally hit theaters, the reason for the tweets was evident. Split is a stealth sequel to Unbreakable. In the film’s final moments, we see David Dunn leave a diner in pursuit of The Beast. Obviously, this left audiences with a myriad of questions, including when they would get to see the showdown between Dunn and Kevin.
Well, M. Night Shyamalan took to Twitter to announce the final film in the Unbreakable saga, Glass. The film is distributed by Blumhouse and Universal Pictures and is scheduled for a January 18th, 2019 release. Also, all of the major players from Unbreakable and Split are returning. This include’s Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke. Okay, those are the basic details we know about the plot. So let the speculation begin! My theory is The Beast and Mr. Glass will team up against David. After all, one has a broken body and the other has a broken mind. But together, they can defeat The Unbreakable Man. Either way, the hype meter is through the roof for this one. Also, seeing M. Night playing in this world again is worth celebrating.
