Labyrinth Soundtrack Gets a Vinyl Re-issue
Capitol Records is re-releasing the Labyrinth original soundtrack on vinyl to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. The score was composed by David Bowie and Trevor Jones.
Enter Jareth’s Labyrinth
David Bowie was one of music’s most fluid personalities. He consistently changed his persona and sound to craft a sweeping career. Heck, he even starred in a comic book. As such, everyone has their “favorite” Bowie. The best part is, there’s no wrong answer. Whichever Bowie you discovered first is likely your favorite. However, for most folks fitting the label of “millennial”, their first Bowie experience is The Goblin King himself. Jareth is an iconic character and stands tall above the world of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth.
At the time, Bowie wanted to write music for a family film. Also, Henson wanted to work with a major pop musician on his next project. So, in 1986, audiences were invited to a Magic Dance of fantasy and puppetry. The film flopped on its initial release. But, like many other cult classics from the time, it found a massive audience on home video. And now, thirty years later, the people who grew up with the film are passing it to their children.
David Bowie’s Iconic Soundtrack
Labyrinth’s 30th anniversary began last fall with a special edition Blu-ray. Since then, Funko Pops, plushies, and various other collectibles hit store shelves. Of course, the festivities had a somber tone when it came to Jareth. Bowie passed away from cancer in early 2016. In order to commemorate the musician’s eclectic career, Record Store Day released several Bowie reissues on vinyl. Conspicuously missing, however, was the soundtrack to Labyrinth.
The simplest explanation is that Warner Bros. Records released Prince’s Batman soundtrack on RSD and Capitol didn’t want to detract from The Purple One’s spotlight on that day. But fear not, Labyrinth’s iconic soundtrack will haunt and seduce listeners on May 12th, 2017. Capitol is choosing a simpler release over an elaborate boutique re-issue. The record is pressed on 120-gram black vinyl in a jacket featuring the original artwork for the album. The inner sleeve does contain pictures of Bowie from the film. The album is available for pre-order on Amazon.
