According to Variety, Netflix is working on a prequel series to the 1982 Jim Henson film The Dark Crystal. The prequel series will be called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Watch the teaser below!
More about The Dark Crystal Prequel Series:
The original film The Dark Crystal followed Gelfling Jen as he quested to save his planet from the malevolent rule of the Skeksis race by putting the eponymous long broken crystal back together. The film appears to use certain fantasy tropes while taking place on a planet distinctly different than our own. This story seems self-contained on its face, but Netflix and the Jim Henson Company have found new facets to explore.
The above teaser contains interview footage of the now late Jim Henson discussing how he was very proud of the original film, saying that “[The Dark Crystal] was the most work, but it was the most fun.” After the interview footage, the teaser shows artists working on the upcoming prequel series. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the traditional puppetry of the Jim Henson company with new digital techniques that weren’t available in 1982 as well as other visual effects.
The prequel series will return to Thra, the world of The Dark Crystal, and will evidently follow three Gelflings as they discover that their world has a dark secret. The official synopsis of the upcoming series is “When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.” This series, considering the movie, doesn’t seem like it could have a happy ending; this possible negative ending makes me question who this series is meant to be for.
Word of the Nerd will report more on any updates to Netflix’s nerdy programming in general and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance specifically as soon as more information becomes available.
