Two Mutants Sign On For X-Men Spinoff
On Thursday, the New Mutants spin-off of the X-Men franchise announced two new cast members. Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark) and Anya Taylor Joy (The Witch) will be signing up for the new film. Maisie Williams will be playing Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane; while Taylor-Joy will be playing Colossus’ sister Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik. These two are part of the eponymous New Mutants; a class of younger international X-Men who are not quite ready to be in the main team, but end up having adventures of their own. The team includes Scottish Wolfsbane, Russian Magik, Kentucky-born Cannonball, Brazilian Sunspot, and Native American Danielle Moonstar.
Williams has been a favorite fan cast for her role for months. When concept art was released of Wolfsbane, fans immediately recognized the resemblance between the art and the actress. Known for playing rebellious noblewoman Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, Williams seemed to be a shoo-in for the lycanthropic mutant. Taylor-Joy is a relative newcomer, but her role on The Witch probably prepared her for Magik’s mutant abilities. Will her Illyana crossover with Deadpool’s Colossus?
Come To Me, My New Mutants
Created in the 1990s as an X-Men spinoff, the comic series New Mutants focused on the younger and newer students at the Xavier Academy. This series also introduced Deadpool and Cable during Rob Liefeld’s run. As of 2017, the original class of New Mutants have become adults (the ones that survived, that is). Sunspot recently became the head of the U.S.Avengers as their banker and as the new Citizen V. His buddy Cannonball serves with that group as well as occasionally teaching at the Jean Grey Academy. Magik often serves as an ally to various X-Men groups, but sometimes has her own mysterious agendas due to her family’s cursed lineage.
Word of the Nerd will continue to keep an eye on this film.
