Bethesda Planning A New Freemium Game

A new job listing has popped up for the Bethesda Game Studios Montreal location. Within the description of the Game Performance Manager position, it describes that the new applicant will be working on a team that “is pushing the bleeding-edge AAA freemium game development”. What does this mean?

That last bullet should show up on EVERY SINGLE JOB POSTING EVER.

Get ready for a new freemium game, people.

Now anyone who knows Bethesda likely knows them best for their most famous game series’ Elder Scrolls and Fallout. While these stories have stuck to PC and console, there was a stint in the mobile gaming community with the release of Fallout Shelter prior to Fallout 4 hitting the shelves. Though this game had a big initial bang, it unfortunately, had petered out rather quickly, with not much to do other than manage your vault and dwellers, fight off an occasional attack or two, and gather a large enough community to unlock all of the rooms. Certainly, the art style was very Fallout style and recognizable and yes the game was fun, but only for a little while. Which is unfortunate given the franchise name attached to it.

Anyone who’s been keeping an eye on it knows the game was expanded upon and has definitely improved. (Enough so that it merited download for me on my Xbox One; worth the space for a fun time waster, for sure.) It’s also appeared on consoles as well as Steam. However had Bethesda incorporated all of the additions of quests and such in the initial launch, Fallout Shelter might’ve still been on the top of the charts.

Did I mention you can get pets in Fallout Shelter now?!

Not wanting to end it there, Bethesda looks to be getting into the world of gaming with microtransactions once again with a new mystery game. The posting describes a “bleeding-edge AAA” game, which to be honest….no clue what that could entail. There’s a lot of speculation that we’re forced into here which is almost maddening. Will the developer stick to Fallout for their next title? Maybe give Elder Scrolls a chance? Or will it be something completely different and take us all by surprise? Is it even going to be mobile? There are no hints on any of this anywhere. So far.

There is some hope that light will be shed on the subject during Bethesda’s next scheduled press conference or during E3. Regardless, it seems that they will be taking this new project quite seriously. To the brave soul who applies and bags the job, good luck. To the rest of you…
