About Lunaire Cosplay
My name is Keahna but most people know me by Lunaire! I’m a cosplayer from Ontario, Canada! I’m a huge lover of Disney and a lover of video games!
How did you first get into cosplay?
I always had an interest in costumes and a friend told me that she cosplays and I gained a big interest in it so she brought me to my first con and that’s how I got into cosplay!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I do cosplay for fun, but! It has led me to get an education in fashion design and soon costume design! So I am hoping to make a career out of that!
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I like to do all 3! I love making cosplays but if the cosplay is too hard to make then I will commission it. If it’s a simple cosplay then I will go to the thrift shop and I will alter it to my liking!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
The average cosplay takes about a month to make because there is also lots of planning involved and I’m a huge procrastinator.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
My favourite cosplay that I have done is my Belle cosplay from Beauty and the Beast! Beauty and the Beast is my favourite movie ever so it was a dream cosplay and it gets better and better every time I wear it!
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My most memorable experience is when I was Princess Anna and a little girl from across the hall saw me and just ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug ever! and she just kept asking me so many questions and I answered all of them in character! It was so heartwarming because she was so excited to see me and she was so sweet!
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love group cosplays! I try to get together as many group cosplays as I can! It’s so much fun and it’s how I became closer to a lot of my really good friends.
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I have 2 super secret cosplays that I’m working on, but there is a third that I am excited to do and I’m working on and it is Chloe from Life is Strange! I am also really hoping to work on a Disney Princess soon as well! but I’m not entirely sure who yet!
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I luckily don’t see a lot of issues myself, but I do know about some and one issue I see the most is popularity contests between cosplayers. And to me, it’s just silly because we are all doing the same thing! and everyone’s cosplay is equally amazing!
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
Disney! I really really love Disney and I’m known mostly for my Disney cosplays.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
My favourite part is interacting with fans! My fans are so supportive and super sweet! And I just love talking to them! I also love going to conventions and meeting up with other cosplayers!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
The internet. Honestly, there is everything! because you can even order fabric online!
Another wonderful one is thrift shops, they are a cosplayers best friend because it’s so much cheaper than most things and you can even buy crafting materials there and even fabric!
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
My anxiety is a huge obstacle, and I’m not over it and I will never be but I’m working hard to get around it and minimize it! It is especially hard and frustrating when it comes sewing, but I have learned that If I have someone sewing with me then I feel confident and I can usually get past a bit of it!
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Not really a life lesson, but cosplay has just brought me happiness and it has helped my anxiety a lot! It has helped me overcome my anxiety of being in a crowded place alone and talking to people!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Do lots of research! It’s so important to do research because it can save you a lot! it can save you from making mistakes, save you money, and save you time!
Another one is having fun! and just know that your cosplay is amazing!!
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
I haven’t been in it very long, so I haven’t seen many changes.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I don’t have many big cosplays that I want to make but the first one that popped into my head was Lottie from Princess and the Frog in her big pink dress!!
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Not really no, I just do what I want to do! and if I can’t afford it all at once then I slowly buy the materials.
What does cosplay mean to you?
To me, cosplay means having fun and enjoying what you love!
It means that you get to be someone else and show off your creative side!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
I think that I will never stop cosplaying, but money is a big factor and it gets really hard at times.Because cosplaying is a very expensive hobby.
