About Raiya Cosplay

Hi, my name is Raiya, I’m currently a trainee to be something like a secretary, I’m 26 years and come from a little village in Bavaria, Germany. Thanks to cosplay I made so many great friends and always meet new awesome people and it makes me happy to see people like what I created!

How did you first get into cosplay?

I just saw Erza Scarlett and thought she is so cool I would love to dress up like her(and before I just dressed up like characters I liked but not really like cosplaying more orientating on their style).

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I do it for fun! It is great to help at stands and get some small presents though.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I prefer doing them from scratch because making my cosplays is the most fun for me. The mistakes, the tears, little scratches and burn wounds and finally when the cosplay starts to look like it should – that feeling is so awesome and makes everything worth. But I already had a friend helping me a lot because o was too slow and also bought some when I started cosplaying.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

Easier ones up to 10 hours, more complicated ones around 4 months.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

My Catalina from Monster Hunter!

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

To see the faces of two producers of Monster Hunter when they saw my cosplay!

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I love them because you can exchange with others and have fun together at conventions.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

Working on: Mystique (comic version) and Bowser.
Planned: Commander, Belle (Hannah Alexander Design), Sailor Mars and some unsure ones.

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

There are some more than one. In my opinion, if you don’t like what others do just go on and let them do what they want you can simply ignore what you don’t want to see and focus on what you like.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

Fighters and sometimes also cute characters! Games definitely inspire me the most.

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

I love all of this combined! But the making process is what I like most, especially when everything is finally finished, and, of course, meeting awesome people at cons!

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Construction stores!

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

The fear of having to throw all this expensive material away because I fail.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Stop thinking too much and start already! (Still working on that though)

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Be nice to each other and respect each other.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

It is growing a lot and there are so many extremely new cosplayers I’m always amazed by that.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Sylvanas Windrunner

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

Sometimes I try but it mostly depends on the current money I have on my account.

What does cosplay mean to you?

Combining all the things I love and tears.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

I don’t know anything yet… maybe going totally broke!
