About Boxxcat Cosplay
Hi ! I’m known as Boxxcat Cosplay. I am a 22 year old Florida cosplayer. My daytime job is a cake decorater at Publix. Cosplaying is a hobby for me. I’ve been going to cons for 7 years now but started cosplaying about 3 years after attending. I am still new to sewing so a lot of my cosplays have been bought. I plan on practicing making props and sewing my own cosplays.
How did you first get into cosplay?
When I went to my first convention ( Metro Con ) 7 years ago.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I do it for fun.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I’m still new to sewing so they’re mostly bought. I do plan on putting more effort into practice.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It varies on the character.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Mami Tomoe from Madoka Magica.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
I love seeing the younger con attendees face’s light up when they see me dressed up as their favorite characters.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love group cosplays!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
Yam (Magi), Maiden with the eyes of blue (YuGiOh), Lucoa ( Dragon Maid).
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
The biggest issue is cosplay precision. unfortunately, a lot of cosplayers talk bad about other cosplayers who don’t have the character down to the T. As in “Oh the color of that wig is not blonde enough for that character, their cosplay is terrible.”
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I love magical girls!
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I love makeup tests and trying on the cosplay when I have all the pieces for it!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I go to JoAnns and Micheal’s for creating cosplays or eBay for buying. There are a lot of new cosplay online stores now that I may buy from in the future.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Trying to find time and money for cosplay. But there are so many supportive people in the community to help.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Make sure you have fun. And at cons …. stay hydrated !!! (especially Florida cons)
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Practice everything, you may think it won’t work or you can’t do this but you got this !!! As long as you practice… you’ll get it.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
There’s so much negativity now that it’s become more popular in my opinion.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Purple Heart from Hyperdimension Neptunia.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
I try to stay under $100 if I can.
What does cosplay mean to you?
It’s a fun hobby that you can explore creative skills with.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
If something drastic happened. But I don’t have a specific thing in mind.
