About Pandora Cosplay
Hey! I’m Pandora and I’m a cosplayer from Melbourne Australia. I’m 21 years old and have been cosplaying for 4 years!
How did you first get into cosplay?
I first got into cosplay from stumbling into pictures of cosplayers when I was looking into my favourite animes! From that moment I knew I wanted to be apart of that.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
It started as fun but the further I progress I would love to make it a profession! It’s a big dream but here’s to hoping 🙂
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I do everything I possibly can to make the whole cosplay from scratch! I love spending hours and hours making pieces and working on the tiny details
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It really just depends on what I’m making! Smaller costumes can take up to 30 hours where as armor builds can take me over 100!
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
My favourite would have to be my Meowth cosplay. It won an award and went a little viral! Pokémon Cosplays have a special place in my heart too.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
It would have to be the reactions from kids! I love seeing their eyes light up when they see their favourite character in real life. Nothing can ever beat that.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love doing group cosplay! They are tedious to organize but are so much fun!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I’m currently working on a Totoro cosplay I’m hoping to finish in a few month, as well as another Cammy cosplay!
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
People that complain when people do ‘sexy’ Cosplays. I don’t understand why it matters and that people can dress up as whoever they want however they want! There are no rules to cosplay and no one should judge someone for making something that has some cleavage.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I love anything with a lot of detail! I enjoy challenging myself so anything I can learn something from is always a go to.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I love making the cosplay! Keeping myself busy is my favourite pastime and cosplay making is the perfect way to do that. I definitely feel accomplished once I’ve finished all my hard work.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
My local spotlight is actually my best friend. I buy everything I can there! And if they don’t have something I want I head straight to eBay.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Unfortunately for me, it was online bullying. It’s a huge push back and kicks you right in the gut. I’m learning to ignore it and just continue to do what I enjoy.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
I have learned so many lessons in my short time as a cosplayer! My public speaking and people skills have sky rocketed. I’m not as timid or shy as I used to be which is great!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Never give up! No matter what obstacles cosplay throws at you, you can get through it. And don’t be hard on yourself! You’ll get better as time goes by I promise.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It’s gotten so much bigger and more of a norm which is incredible! So many more resources have been opened and it makes so many things Cosplay related much easier to come across, and it’s only going to get bigger!
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I would love to do a mermaid cosplay with one of those swimmable latex tails. I’ll get there one day!
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Yes, I do! I like to write out everything I need to buy and calculate it so I know what I’m working with.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Cosplay to me means getting out of my shell and spending time with like minded people! It’s like living an amazing double life.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Probably finances. It does get really expensive and I would have to cut down if I were to become short on funds.
