Matt Reeves Is Re-Writing The Batman

During an appearance on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast, director Matt Reeves revealed he is rewriting The Batman.

Reeves’ New Vision For The Caped Crusader

Making a movie is hard. One of the most crucial elements of a film is the script. Besides words on a page, a film’s script contains the over arcing narrative, character, and tonal beats for the story. If the script fails, the film is hobbled from the beginning. Furthermore, Matt Reeves is a meticulous director. His last two projects took three years to release because of how labor intensive his films are.

However, he is getting ready to helm a film in the notorious DCEU. Granted, the DCEU is going through a big public image shift thanks in no small part to Wonder Woman. So, when Reeves announced he’s working on a new script for The Batman, alarmists responded almost immediately. Many saw it as another nail in the coffin for the DCEU. There were rumors of the Ben Affleck/Geoff Johns script being terrible, or crazy, or any other scare quotable adjective.

However, the real story isn’t about how the DCEU is failing miserably. It’s about how the DCEU is taking steps to course correct. Most folks have no idea about the contents of the Affleck/Johns script. But, it’s a safe bet that it wasn’t outright terrible. Ben Affleck won an Oscar for his very first screenplay and Geoff Johns is one of comics’ most respected writers.

But, Warner Bros. is shifting the tone of the DCEU in a major way. So, they likely brought on Reeves to shepherd The Batman in that new direction. The man is no stranger to screenwriting. And his Apes movies are sprawling and bleak. But, they’re also a blast to watch. Furthermore, there are no reports of bad blood between the director, studio, and star. Matt Reeves is a wonderful, competent, and confident film maker. The DCEU is lucky to have him. As fans of Batman, let’s take a collective pause and be excited about such a talented film maker heading up The Batman.
