Tragedy Strikes Walking Dead Set
A stuntman on the hit show The Walking Dead died on Thursday on the hit show’s Atlanta set. Stuntman John Bernecker fell 20 feet off a balcony to a concrete floor and missing the safety pads by inches, suffered a head injury. He was taken immediately to Atlanta Medical Center where he died of his injuries. The official cause of death, according to the coroner, was blunt force trauma due to the fall. AMC, the network home of The Walking Dead, has shut down production temporarily in the wake of this tragedy. AMC issued a statement saying “We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for ‘The Walking Dead’ and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set. He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital and we have temporarily shut down production.”
A Stuntman’s Life Cut Short
Bernecker was a veteran stuntman and fight choreographer. His credits included the Hunger Games series, Olympus Has Fallen, and Logan. In addition to The Walking Dead, Bernecker also worked on the first season of True Detective. He also worked on the upcoming Black Panther film. Both SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, and the Atlanta office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have opened investigations into this tragedy.
Bad Week For Hit Series
This incident caps off a terrible week for the series, based on the comic book published by Image Comics. Earlier in the week, former showrunner Frank Darabont produced emails in his court case against AMC Networks. Darabont is suing AMC Networks for his share of profits; AMC has made a motion to dismiss the case, saying Darabont was fired for erratic behavior. The emails, laden with profanity, reveal a chaotic work environment where the overwhelmed showrunner was, as Variety put it “unwilling to take advice or direction from others.” The case is ongoing.
