The Winds of Winter May Get 2018 Release

According to Variety, George R. R. Martin has claimed that The Winds of Winter, the next book in his popular A Song of Ice and Fire series, may be released in 2018. The A Song of Ice and Fire series is the basis for the hit HBO show Game of Thrones.

Ever since the fifth book in the ASoIaF series, A Dance With Dragons, was released in July of 2011, fans of the series have been begging George R. R. Martin for the next installment of the series. This impatience was fed by the growing popularity of the HBO series Game of Thrones, which uses ASoIaF as the source material and will finish next season, despite the fact that George R. R. Martin has not finished ASoIaF.

Fans of Westeros, your wait for new content from George R. R. Martin may soon be at an end! Martin wrote on his blog that he has been working on a history of the Targaryen kings with multiple volumes. The first volume that will run from Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III (who became king after the first Dance of the Dragons in the ASoIaF backstory) is mostly written and will be called Fire and Blood. He thinks that Fire and Blood will come out in late 2018 to early 2019. More specifically, he wrote that “Whether [The Winds of Winter] or the first volume of FIRE AND BLOOD will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018… and who knows, maybe two.” Therefore, according to George R. R. Martin himself, it’s possible that the sixth book in the ASoIaF series will be released as early as next year. He also addressed recent rumors which said that he was far behind on The Winds of Winter or that he had already finished it, calling both sides “equally false and equally moronic.”

For those of you too impatient to wait for The Winds of Winter for your ASoIaF fix, season seven of Game of Thrones, which is tackling plot points not currently covered in the series (although there is some debate whether the outcome in the show will be the same as in the books) is currently airing on HBO.
