Kiera Marie Cosplay

How did you first get into cosplay?

After my first NYCC in 2012, I was super inspired by all the cosplays there

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

Just for fun! But if a career came out of it that would be awesome.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

Hybrid. I don’t sew (other than alterations) but I do enjoy making armor/props.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

It depends on the cosplay.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

Quiet from MGSV.

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

Competing in a cosplay competition at Waku Waku in 2015. I didn’t place, but the crowd was screaming MGS quotes at me and cheering loudly! I felt truly a part of something bigger than myself at that moment.

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I love them but it’s always so difficult finding one!

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

Celica from FE Echoes! <3 I am just about done with Act 4, it took me a little over 3 days to beat it but it’s my favorite Fire Emblem yet.

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

I think people are too concerned with how much skin one chooses to show. They don’t consider a swimsuit version of a cosplay legitimate, even if the cosplayer has already done the full version. I think we need to be more accepting of other’s choices and stop degrading them for how they choose to cosplay. Not everyone has the time to make cosplays either, and materials can be costly. Stop bashing on people within your own community for what they choose to do with themselves.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

Strong female characters. Even if they seem shy or to themselves, they fight for what they believe in when it matters most. Other than that I love creative design! For example, I cosplayed Ahri because I’m a big LoL nerd and love how she looks!

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

I actually love the editing process the most. I love manipulating photos, messing with lighting, effects, etc.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

I have gotten the most from Micheals but Etsy has a lot of specific fabrics (I used a tulle fabric from Etsy for Ahri’s orb).

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

Being okay with weight fluctuation. Sometimes I avoid photoshoots because I gain and lose weight often. Sometimes I feel I need to be a certain weight to pull off a specific character and it makes me feel insecure.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Learning to respect others for their choice to sexualize themselves, and let yourself do the same. I used to dislike cosplayers who flaunted their body. I felt it “took away” from the original cosplay. There are specific lines that make me uncomfortable, aka a children’s show such as the Rugrats being sexualized (I have seen it LOL) But other than that, it’s okay to love your body, and to want attention. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

It’s worth it. it’s worth The money, the time, the investment. It’s worth being uncomfortable in. It’s worth it.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

I feel it’s become so much more diverse in terms of gender, race, etc. I love all the gender-bend cosplays I see as well as people of all ethnicities pulling off whatever the heck they want!

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Power suit Samus 100%.

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

I try to!

What does cosplay mean to you?

Expressing your passion for a game, tv show, anime, etc!

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Probably not LOL.
