Immortal Iron Fists #2
School of Hard Knocks
At the end of Issue #1 of Immortal Iron Fists we saw Pei adopt her own super hero costume and save school mate Jayce from some bullies, but things did not end well for Jayce as now he has been kidnapped by someone or something? Immortal Iron Fists #2 picks up with Danny Rand trying to figure out why these demons have come into China town and how to stop them? Luckily he has hired a “nanny” to help clean the house and help Pei with her school work. Pei is still struggling to figure out how to fit in at her new school, things were much different in the mystical city of K’un L’un. As Pei attempts to make friends, Danny and detective Li discover some information about these demons and things are about to get weird.
Kaare Andrews is doing a great job with his follow up to his Iron Fist the Living Weapon series. Immortal Iron Fists #2 does a great job getting some more characterization into Pei and having her slowly grow and be fully rounded. It is also just a really fun story line, I like seeing Danny Rand in this more mentor/fathering role and Pei figuring out her place in this new world; plus in each Issue, you get to see strange creatures/demons and Kung-Fu fighting so what is not to love about that! I do have a theory about what is going to happen with this “nanny” and how she fits into the story but I will keep it to myself for now. Andrews also drops a great Bruce Lee quote so that is always going to get extra points from me.
As in the first issue, Afu Chan’s art is half and half with me. I really do not like how he draws faces and characters when they are static and just talking; they just seem “off” to me. Now on the other hand in the action scenes, the art looks amazing! It is fluid and dynamic and everything just flows together from scene to scene. I really don’t know how I feel about it, I still do really like the design of Pei’s “super hero” costume it looks great! I am also enjoying Shelly Chen’s coloring on this series, everything is given this more “muted” color tone until the action scenes heat up and then scenes are given some great bright colors that bring the pages to life. Kaare Andrews also does some marvelous covers for this series check out the cover for issue #3 here!
Immortal Iron Fists #2 is a fun entry into this six issue bi-weekly Comixology exclusive comic series (you can check it out for “free” on Comixology Unlimited right now!). I still have the same continuity hang ups as in some other Marvel series (I am looking at you The Defenders) I am not sure when or where that this takes place in the larger Marvel Comics Universe, but it is best that I do not think about that. Pei is finding out that public school may be a lot harder than anything she experienced in K’un L’un. Still trying to find her place, learning the teachings from her Thunderer the Iron Fist himself Danny Rand and making true friends is tougher than she thought.
