The Wrath of Khan Heads Back to Theaters

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is heading back to theaters in September 2017. The Fathom Event celebrates the film’s 35th anniversary.

Khan Turns 35

The summer of 1982 changed film history. Many consider it the best summer for movies ever. And who can blame them? Early June 1982 saw the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The first Star Trek film did not do well critically. However, it turned a record breaking profit. So, Paramount ordered a sequel. The sequel improved upon the first film in every respect and is one of the most well-regarded science fiction films of the 1980’s.

The film follows the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise on a three-week training exercise. During the trip, they respond to a distress call from a nearby planet. But, the distress call is a trap set by the villainous Khan Noonien Singh. The rest is celluloid history.

The Wrath of Khan is universally praised as the best Star Trek film. It makes excellent use of its runtime but feels sweeping in its scope. Also, the addition of Khan as the villain provides a deep dive into Star Trek‘s mythos. Khan appeared in a 1967 episode of Star Trek titled Space Seed. Star Trek II’s writer, Harve Bennett chose Khan based on Ricardo Montalban’s performance. He claimed Space Seed featured the “compelling villain lacking in the first film.” Fortunately, Montalban eagerly returned to the character.

So, as the film approaches its 35th anniversary, Star Trek II is headed back to theaters. Fathom Events is hosting events in more than 600 theaters on September 10th and September 13th. The special event features a remastered Director’s Cut of the film, and a special introduction from Admiral Kirk himself, William Shatner. Tickets are on sale now. If you grew up loving Star Trek, this is right up your alley. However, if you’ve never experienced a Fathom Event, start here. Fathom’s presentations feature wonderful supplemental material and stunning restorations of cinema classics.
