Variety has confirmed that Cara Delevingne has joined the cast of Amazon’s new fantasy drama series Carnival Row. Delevingne was recently known in sci-fi film for her role in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets as Laureline.
More about Carnival Row
Carnival Row is a fantasy drama series that is ” set in a neo-Victorian city. Mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered in the city, and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population. The investigation of a string of unsolved murders begins to eat away at whatever peace still exists.” The setting description sort of reminds me of recent fantasy novels Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke and Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho, where England and Fairyland have a distinct connection, but with a Chandler-esque noir twist. Cara will be playing Vignette Stonemoss, who is a “faerish refugee who flees homeland to come to the Burgue, where she must contend not only with rampant human prejudice against her kind, but with the secrets that have followed her to this new place.”
Orlando Bloom was recently announced as the star of Carnival Row. He will be playing police inspector Rycroft Philostrate, who “investigat[es] the murder of a faerie showgirl on Carnival Row. Rycroft is not supposed to care about the death of another faerish refugee, but he does, and getting to the bottom of what happened to her will come at a big cost.” This will be the first major TV role for both Bloom and Delevingne.
Carnival Row has been ordered for an eight episode first season. The series will be available on Amazon Streaming when it’s released, but that date has not yet been announced. It is likely that Carnival Row will debut on Amazon Streaming in 2019
