HBO to Film Multiple Ending to Game of Thrones

It looks like HBO isn’t taking any chances with the Game of Thrones series finale, safeguarding against leaks and spoilers the best way they can think of. They are planning to film multiple endings to the series.

When speaking at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the president of programming at HBO, Casey Bloys, let this bomb drop:

[For the ending of Game of Thrones] they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens. You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.

That’s right. HBO will be filming false endings to actively trick fans and to head off spoilers. This is at least partially due to the massive leak from season 7, which included scripts, episode outlines, and even the entirety of the “Beyond the Wall” episode.

Game of Thrones - S07E07 - The Dragon and the WolfIt’s difficult when you have a project this large with so many hands involved to keep things quiet. Game of Thrones also exists on a scale, unlike many other shows. Filming occurs in 6 different countries, sometimes in the middle of nowhere and sometimes in major cities. This makes it rather difficult to keep everything under wraps, especially when certain locations are iconic in the show. There are fans who consistently watch and photograph filming locations to keep other watchers informed. The site Watchers on the Wall is a constant source of show updates.

Then there are the leaks. The massive season seven leak was not the first the show has suffered, though it was arguably the worst, considering the timing and how far into the series it was. A few seasons back, some of the media preview episodes were leaked onto the internet where regular fans could watch them. There are plenty of people who seem to exist to find and distribute content ahead of schedule, so fans will probably see at least one ending before schedule, but at least no one can be sure if it’s the real one.

The question is, how brutal are these alternate endings going to be? Chances are, at least one of them is going to feel like punishment for looking up spoilers.

Any ideas for what might happen in the possible endings? Who will die and who will win? Let us know in the commments.
