Obviously, super hero films are the most pervasive genre of modern movie. And while a lot of the films play around with genres like political thriller and heist film, they are still big, blockbuster movies. Enter The New Mutants. The film takes place in Fox’s expansive X-Men universe. It stars Anya-Taylor Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Masie Williams. Of course, The New Mutants introduced the world to Deadpool. However, the film version of the superhero teams finds them as teenagers attempting to escape a horrific underground lab.

Director Josh Boone describes the film as “A full fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe.” Comingsoon.net posted an exclusive animatic showing the team facing down a demon bear.  The odds are stacked against the heroes, and they’re doing what they need to for survival. According to the film’s creators, The New Mutants does not feature costumes or super villains in the traditional sense. The film began production on July 10th and is eyeing a wrap for this week.

The film finished principal photography incredibly fast. Especially given the effects driven nature of super hero films. However, that speaks to the lean, mean horror film Boone and company are aiming for. Fox is taking huge chances with the X-Men properties. However, the bigger their risks, the higher their rewards. Deadpool is the second highest grossing R-rated film of all time. Logan gave fans the Wolverine they’ve always wanted. And Legion counts as some of the year’s best television. So, until we receive word to the contrary, consider us completely excited!
