New Star Wars Trailer Coming In October

Star Wars star Mark Hamill tweeted a hint about the release date of a new Star Wars Episode VIII trailer. The tweet has since been deleted.

Star Wars Begins Its Marketing Blitz

Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser posterBefore Disney took over Lucasfilm, the last proper Star Wars film was Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. And for years, fans thought that was the end of their beloved journey. However, the House of Mouse assumed control of the films and began releasing them with astonishing regularity. The two years leading up to the release of Episode VII were an all-out marketing assault. Everything from action figures to oranges flew the Star Wars banner. However, Episode VIII adopted a more conservative marketing strategy. Until now. In the coming weeks, Disney is ramping up the Episode VIII marketing machine.

Luke Skywalker himself spoiled the surprise with a now-deleted tweet. In the tweet, a fan asked Mark Hamill about a new trailer for the upcoming film. His response was “Watch Monday Night Football on Monday, October 9th for no reason in particular.” It’s a safe bet the full Episode VIII trailer debuts during the Vikings/Bears game. Actually, this is a pretty clever move on Disney’s behalf. Disney owns ESPN, the network airing October 9th’s game. It’s an easy way to drive ratings and ad revenue during that time.

Additionally, Lucasfilm announced a team-up with six global brands for even more Star Wars goodies. General Mills, Nissan, Verizon, Christian Louboutin, VIZIO, and Royal Philips are bringing Star Wars themed everything into stores across the globe this winter. Between Star Wars and Marvel, Disney is the biggest perpetrator of these global marketing initiatives. They are intrusive but effective.

However, given Disney’s stacked release schedule, they must be careful not to trip over their own feet. Yes, the studio is marketing a lot of properties. But, they are all varied. This helps consumers so they don’t feel burnt out. Ultimately, a push towards smaller marketing windows is a positive thing.
