Brenton Thwaites Is Nightwing For Titans Series
DC Comics announced on Thursday that Brenton Thwaites will be Dick Grayson/Nightwing for their Titans television series. Thwaites most recently appeared in the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie as the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. He has also appeared in The Giver, Gods of Egypt, and Maleficent. Thwaites beat out several people who were gunning for the role, including Steven E. McQueen (Vampire Diaries) and Drake Bell (Ultimate Spider-Man, Drake and Josh).
Speaking on the DC Comics website, Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns had plenty to say about the casting. “Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in the DC universe, and it wasn’t easy to find him but we have. Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger and physical presence of Batman’s former protege and the Titans future leader. We’re extremely lucky he’s chosen to bring his talents to this project and this character.”
Gotham’s Knight Errant
Nightwing, aka Dick Grayson, is actually one of DC Comics’ oldest characters. Debuting in 1940 as the original Robin, this circus acrobat-turned-orphan has been the sidekick to Batman as well as leading several hero groups. Most notably, Dick has been the leader of the Teen Titans in various forms, as well as The Outsiders and, briefly, the Justice League itself. Graduating to Nightwing during The Judas Contract story line in The New Teen Titans, Dick has proven himself to be a very capable hero outside of Batman’s shadow.
Dick is also the most seen Robin on screen. He has been played by Burt Ward in the 1960s Batman TV show. Chris O’Donnell portrayed the character in the Schumacher directed Batman films. He has been voiced the most, as Robin and Nightwing, by Loren Lester in various DC animated projects. Other voice actors portraying Nightwing have included Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse McCartney, and Sean Maher.
The Titans series is set to debut in 2018 on DC’s streaming service.
