10 Things to be Excited for After The Defenders

Netflix’s Marvel The Defenders has finally been released and I for one thoroughly enjoyed it while not perfect it was a lot of fun and great to see these characters interact with each other. You can check out our own James Goodson’s review of the entire Defenders series here. Now that we have all watched and absorbed what happened it is time to get hyped for what is to come next! It has been announced that Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist are all getting a second season and Daredevil will be getting a 3rd season, we also have The Punisher that should be debuting sometime in November so there is a lot to speculate on, these are 10 Things to be Excited for After The Defenders.

(Spoilers for The Defenders, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist ahead)

1. Daughters of the Dragon/Misty Knights cybernetic arm

Misty Knight and Luke Cage from Luke Cage Season 2

This one is a no brainier Misty Knight and Colleen Wing have both already been introduced into the Marvel Netflix World in Luke Cage season 1 and Iron Fist season 1 respectively and fans loved both of these characters portrayals and now we have seen them share the screen shortly on The Defenders series, now we need to see them in action together. They have already pretty much laid the ground work for this so it should not take too much work to get the Daughters of the Dragon in action together. Misty Knight also had her arm chopped off in The Defenders which most comic book fans were waiting for like those scenes in Hot Tub Time Machine (NSFW language). Well, it has now been confirmed through set photos Misty Knight will have her “cybernetic” arm in Luke Cage season 2. This is where things get interesting, now the Netflix Marvel shows have been relatively grounded with super powers and technology, if this was the MCU Tony Stark could just slap a new arm on her and we would think nothing about it, but it is going to be very interesting to see how they do this and if maybe they will make a mention of possible “Stark” technology to make a connection to the MCU!I seriously doubt it but it will be very interesting to see how they handle this.

2. Iron Fist in the mask

Iron FistI was super upset by the end of The Defenders that they did not throw a mask on Danny Rand and they had the perfect chance at the end. In one of the final scenes of The Defenders we see a shadowy silhouette of a man on a roof top, did Daredevil survive? Then the man’s fist lights up showing Danny Rand in a green and yellow striped track suit looking over the city. It was a pretty cool scene but how awesome would that have been if he had his mask on! Since Iron Fist season 2 has been announced they really just have to put a mask on him, the fans want it and Finn Jones wants it so it has to happen right?

3. Power Man and Iron Fist

The Defenders - Luke Cage & Iron Fist
Luke Cage & Iron Fist

We need a Power Man and Iron Fist series stat! Yes, Power Man and Iron Fist has been a long time favorite of mine so I am a little biased, but I also loved the way Mike Colter and Finn Jones played off each other in The Defenders and would love to see them continue to grow together in a series all to their own. I think having both of these characters would allow the 13 episode format to “breathe” a little bit better.

4. Moon Knight

Moon Knight
Moon Knight

So there have been several teasers of the new Punisher series set to premiere sometime this fall and now we have news reports that another Marvel character could be appearing in the series. Speculation abounds who it could be? It could be one of The Defenders (most likely not Daredevil), but it could also be a character we have never seen before and a lot of people are speculating that it could be Marc Spector. I have been a Moon Knight fan for a long while and now is the perfect time for him to hit the big time with his own Netflix series. Moon Knights power set fits perfectly with the other Netflix Marvel Heroes nothing super flashy or that would require a lot of special effects. He has a plethora of stories that could fill more than one season and you can go in several directions with him story wise. You can do the basic crime fighting Super-hero stuff, delve into his mental illness issues and even dip your toes into the supernatural realm, with Moon Knight the sky is the limit for the variety of stories you can tell. It would be perfect to set him up in The Punisher series as he does have a military background like Frank Castle.

5. Born Again

The Defenders Season 1
The Defenders Season 1

What a great tease for comic book fans with the end of The Defenders showing Matt Murdock bandaged up being taken care of by nuns and someone saying “go get Maggie”, it sets up the fantastic (and my personal favorite comic book story) “Born Again” story line perfectly for Daredevil season 3. Another character that plays a pivotal role in the “Born Again” story line Will Simpson aka “Nuke” has already appeared in Jessica Jones Season 1 and the seeds were planted in Daredevil season 2 of Wilson Fisk uncovering the fact that Matt Murdock is Daredevil, so just about everything is there to bring that story line to life. Captain America, Thor and Iron Man all show up in that story line also so maybe even a mention of them would be really cool.

6. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage back together

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones

It was great to see Luke Cage and Jessica Jones talking to each other in The Defenders. Though Luke is still with Claire at the end of The Defenders, the characters had a nice moment at the end that hinted at them getting back together and as most comic book fans now in the comic book world they are married and have a child, that would be a drastic change for the Jessica Jones we have seen on our TV screens and I would really like to see them back together.

7. The Punisher

The Punisher
The Punisher

We are getting closer and closer to The Punisher on Netflix and it is going to be very interesting how the show will flow around the vigilante killer. Most of the hype comes from Jon Bernthal’s excellent portrayal of The Punisher in Daredevil season 2. Now the character of Frank Castle has already had three movies based on him and we got most of his back story from Daredevil season 2, so I am interested to see what Marvel decides to do with his Netflix series.

8. More street level Marvel characters

Marvel Comics' street level heroes
Marvel Comics’ street level heroes

Now I know I already gave Moon Knight his own section, but he seems like the most likely to be introduced into the universe and has the most “hype” around him, but that does not mean there are not a wealth of characters to be excited about that could come along. I would love to see the possibility of Shang-Chi showing up in Iron Fist season 2, or someone like White Tiger or Red Wolf playing a “Punisher” like role in other series and possibly spinning off on to their own series.

9. Jessica Jones Season 2

The first season of Jessica Jones basically used up her most popular story and unlike Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist she does not have a plethora of back issues and stories for writers to dig through and add to her second season. This kind of makes what is going to happen in season 2 a complete mystery. We know what Kilgrave did to her will still have some effects on her as he is set to appear again more than likely as flashbacks or as a haunting figure in her head, but who or what will be her main drive in season 2 is anyone’s guess.

10. The Defenders Season 2

The Defenders

While The Defenders was very enjoyable it did have its faults, but now that the first introduction of all these characters is done I think the writers and creators could have a lot of fun whenever they meet up again. You could really start to play with more with the characters and now that they know each other and have those relationships evolve further to the fans delight.
