13 Halloween Songs for Nerds

Halloween is the favorite holiday of most nerds I know, but it gets overshadowed by Christmas more and more every year. Especially when it comes to music. It’s so hard to find a good Halloween carol these days, you know? But I’m here to help! Let’s open up the vault and see what nerdy Halloween songs we can find to get you in the mood for trick or treating!

13 Halloween Songs for Nerds

1. “Creepy Doll” by Jonathan Coulton with Paul and Storm

A psychological thriller about why you shouldn’t buy strange objects from antique stores. This is the live version, which I prefer because of the fantastic backup from Paul and Storm. But if studio recordings are more your thing, here’s that version.

2. “Zombie Holiday” by Miracle of Sound

If killing hordes of zombies on a tropical island resort is your idea of a great Halloween, this song from Gavin Dunne (aka Miracle of Sound) is your jam. Based on the video game Dead Island, this song mashes up a few musical styles.

3. “Rather Be a Zombie” by The Dollyrots

You don’t always have to kill zombies, either! Sometimes you can love them. Pop punk icons The Dollyrots go acoustic on this love song that will bring a tear to your infected eye.

4. “Goin’ Down to Dunwich” by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets

Canadian band The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets have basically built an entire musical career out of songs based on the stories of horror master H.P. Lovecraft. If you’ve read Lovecraft, you’ll appreciate all the references. If you haven’t, well, it’s still a pretty rocking tune (and what’s wrong with you?!).

5. “The Tell-Tale <3” by MC Lars with Mega Ran

Nerdcore rapper MC Lars is a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe. He recorded an entire EP of songs about Poe, and it was hard to pick just one for this list. This one’s the creepiest, but “Mr. Raven” with the Dead Milkmen” was a close contender.

6. “Hitchcock Starlet” by Horrorpops

You don’t need supernatural monsters for a scary good time. Sometimes the scariest monsters are just like you and me. Well, probably more like you than like me. Anyway… Hitchcock!

7. “Heavy Weather: Storm ov the Undead” by Rainbowdragoneyes

The music of Rainbowdragoneyes has been described as “extreme chiptune dance metal” and I can’t think of a more accurate way of putting it!

8. “Bloodletting” by Concrete Blonde

Remember the 80s and 90s when nobody cared about zombies? Vampires were the coolest undead back then.

9. “The Dybbuk” by The Kabalas

In Jewish mythology, a dybbuk is a malevolent spirit that possesses people’s bodies. This is a somewhat more lighthearted take on the creatures.

10. “Ghostrider” by Rollins Band

This is a double-whammy of nerddom. It’s a song about Marvel’s spirit of vengeance, Ghost Rider, and it comes from the soundtrack of the movie about another comic book spirit of vengeance, James O’Barr’s The Crow (RIP Brandon Lee).

11. “Buffy Marathon” by Kraken Not Stirred

Admit it, you thought about spending your Halloween this way.

12. “Upside Down” by Mikey Mason

Speaking of spending Halloween watching TV… Wait, you’ve already binged all of season 2 of Stranger Things? NO SPOILERS!

13. “The Great Pumpkin Waltz” by David Benoit

Finally, a childhood classic.

Happy Halloween!

Thanks for coming on this musical journey with me! Whether you regard the things that go bump in the night as friends or foes, you should be able to find something on this list that you like.
