About Minxy’s Mayhem
My name is Missy of Minxy’s Mayhem. I am 23 but I have been cosplaying since I was a little girl, my occupation changes regularly, I’ve had many jobs but at the moment I work for an amazing insurance company- I’ve also sold everything from crossbows to jewelry! I live in Adelaide where we have three conventions year and I strive to attend each one where possible. One day I hope to become a recognized cosplayer.
How did you first get into cosplay?
It first started when I was 5! I received a child’s Wonder Woman costume, Cinderella and Snow White, a year later book week started at school and I’ve been dressing up ever since!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
At the moment it’s just for fun! I love the cosplay community and I’ve made more friends than I could count! However, it may be nice one day to apply to be a cosplay ambassador – but we will see!
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
Usually I hybrid my costumes, I only recently was able to afford a sewing machine so I would purchase my costumes in bits and pieces – the props, however, are always made from scratch. My dad and I spend hours and weeks on props- he’s a bit of a nerd too!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
Up to a few weeks depending on the complexity. Like I said my father and I usually make the props instead of the costumes, however, when I do work on costumes it usually doesn’t take me more than a couple of weeks.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
It is very hard to pick a favourite costume because I have one which is my favourite character and another which many people advise me that I look amazing in. Those two costumes with be my Ahri and my Jinx costume.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My most memorable experience was finding out that a local celebrity also enjoyed cosplaying. We met by chance at a convention and we have been great friends ever since!
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I find people that can be part of a group cosplay absolutely amazing because the coordination of being able to get people together is something that can be quite difficult. I would love to be part of a group cosplay one day but I’ll have to get used to my sewing machine first!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
Usually, I try to keep it a secret for as long as possible but at the moment my plans are currently to cosplay as either Arcade Miss Fortune or perhaps Star Guardian Janna.
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
The usually aren’t many issues in the community however over time a cosplayer might find issues with people who have not attended conventions previously. As a quick example, some girls wear costumes that make their age hard to determine and a lot of young men tend to comment and make inappropriate gestures often.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
For anyone that has seen my Facebook page, they might notice that I have loved cosplaying any character from League of Legends. I have played the game since it’s first release and I’ve never looked back!
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
My favourite part have to be searching for the best Cosplay to do. The reason why is because it’s a time where I get to sit down with my dad who helps me with the props and my mum who always wants to make sure I look amazing and we get to look into all the amazing costumes that could be available to us and decide what we could create out of these amazing pieces.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Funnily enough the best resources are gathering pieces which might just be from regular clothing stores and adjusting them from there. I find that buying the material is quite expensive so sometimes we can go to a second hand store and buy sheets and tablecloths that are very cheap but the material is still perfect.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
The biggest obstacle would have to be my self confidence. When I first came out to cosplay I wasn’t coming out as anyone in particular, just a tiny little goth kid. I didn’t think I was going to be particular Sheila leave popular however because I fell in love with the cosplay community I decided to try harder to look more like an actual character the second time around I was still nervous but it ended up being an amazing experience.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
The main thing I learnt is that it’s always good to see keep a sewing kit in your handbag. The reason why is simply because when you go around as a cosplayer you find that even if you don’t need the kit yourself you will have lots of friends that will have cosplay troubles and it’s always good to help someone else it’s absolutely an amazing feeling.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Just have fun with it, don’t actually try to worry about the way that your cosplay looks, don’t worry if you bought the costume, it’s about having fun it’s not about the actual costume itself that you’re trying to make.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
When conventions first started here it they were very small, if anything only about 200 people would show up to a convention. However, now we get abundances of nearly 20000 people showing up it’s the most amazing thing and the city is starting to become more acceptable of seeing people dress up and walk around which is amazing.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?
It would be the cause player list from League of Legends with mechanical spider legs!
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
I tried to but like everything else it’s almost impossible to stick to!
What does cosplay mean to you?
It’s just been someone else for a day and even though I like who I am as a person it’s amazing to talk to other people and find out that they can be just like me where they have a normal life that no one would suspect them of being part of this world of costumes but then after talking to them you find out that they are part of this world just like you are.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Only if they stopped hosting conventions!
