Raising Dion Set For Netflix Production
On Thursday, Variety announced that Netflix has made an order for a new supernatural series. Raising Dion has been ordered for a 10 episode season. The series is about “a young, recently widowed African-American mother who discovers her son has magical powers. Her struggle with being a single mother is compounded by her need to teach Dion how to handle his supernatural skills and her search for answers about the source of his abilities, with help from her late husband’s best friend.”
Carol Barbee will act as showrunner, executive producer, and as a writer for the pilot. Michael B Jordan will star as Dion’s late father, as well as executive producing as well. The series is based on a short film and comic by director Dennis Liu, who will direct the pilot. In a statement to Variety, Liu said, “I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation in film and television and I’m excited to partner with Netflix, who I know shares that commitment. More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with ‘Raising Dion’ is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”
Netflix Excited For New Series
Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content, also issued a statement: “We haven’t seen this type of superhero story before — an origin myth full of imagination, wonder and adventure, all grounded in the experiences of a modern single mother. Michael B. Jordan is an exciting and dynamic talent, and I’m excited to see him, Macro, Carol and the team translate Dennis’ unique vision to television.”
Genre Savvy Pedigree
Jordan has already made a name for himself in various genre films. Coming to fame in Josh Trank’s directorial debut, Chronicle, Jordan garnered acclaim for the title character in the Rocky sequel, Creed. However, he stumbled when he played Johnny Storm in Trank’s disastrous reboot of the Fantastic 4 franchise. He has bounced back since and is poised to play the villain in the upcoming Black Panther film.
Raising Dion does not have a release date as of yet. Word of the Nerd will continue to keep an eye on this story.
