BlizzCon 2017: Day One Recap
It has been a big day at BlizzCon 2017. Just focusing on the news about games is overwhelming, much less trying to keep track of all the e-sports. There is a lot of great new content coming to fans of every Blizzard game (except Diablo 3).
World of Warcraft
Just over one year after the release of the Legion expansion for World of Warcraft, Blizzard has hyped up the community again. The new expansion, Battle of Azeroth, was introduced today with a breathtaking cinematic. The expansion will feature the brand new continents of Kul Tiras and Zandalar, a new level cap of 120, new raids, new dungeons, the ability to plunder uncharted islands, and much more. Both continents are sure to bring new enemies and mechanics.
Finally, Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft will receive an official classic-style “vanilla” server! More information on this is coming soon, Blizzard promises.
The biggest news on the StarCraft front is that StarCraft II is going to be free to play. Blizzard wants to make it easier for new players to get into the tough strategy game, so they are making certain content free. You can check which content will be free right here! That free-to-play content goes live soon, on November 14th!
To everyone’s surprise, a Western gamer who goes by Juan Carlos ‘SpeCial’ Tena Lopez is looking to dominate the normally Eastern-player heavy Starcraft World Championship Series. If SpeCial can win, it would be the biggest upset in recent e-sports history! His BlizzCon journey starts today!
The most popular card game on PC and Mobile is getting another update. Okay, new content for Hearthstone surprised no one, but it is still great to hear! The newest expansion, Kobolds & Catacombs, was introduced with a great cinematic that reminded me a lot of a song you would hear in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
This expansion seems very focused on new legendary weapons. Speaking of, you’re given a random legendary weapon for free if you log in during the release, so be sure to log in! There are also new Glorious Gear, Spellstones, and Quests!
This promises to completely shift the meta again, and give us all the chance to climb that long ladder!
A lot is going on in Overwatch e-sports this week. Overwatch at BlizzCon promises to give us a lot of excitement!
Everyone was happy to hear Blizzard announce a new Overwatch hero, Moira. She is an ex-Overwatch scientist who left Overwatch after she felt they were holding her back. Moira is a support hero who heals by sapping the life out of enemies and giving it to her allies in the form of biotic energy. She has the ability to teleport short distances, and her ultimate is a long-range beam that heals allies and hurts enemies, even through barriers.
I wonder how many games will try and copy Moria’s very unique skill set!
Heroes of the Storm
Heroes of the Storm is my personal favorite Blizzard title. I have spent countless hours not only playing, but watching the Heroes Global Series play out over the last few months. I have been pumped to watch Fnatic and MVP Black face off at Blizzcon since the mid-season brawl months ago. This weekend in HotS is going to be exhilarating!
Blizzard announced two new heroes who will fight in the Nexus, the interdimensional realm where Blizzard champions from different games meet to do battle. The new heroes are Hanzo, from Overwatch, and Alexstrasza, from World of Warcraft.
Massive changes are coming to HotS soon. New matchmaking, new battlefield mechanics, stealth reworks, and much more will be covered, in depth, at a later panel!
That’s All for Day One of BlizzCon 2017
