Hey, my name’s Selina. I’m 26 old, from Austria and cosplay since 2006. However I started putting more effort into it since around 2011. My favorite part regarding cosplays is the wig styling and makeup. It’s inspiring to see just how different you can look with just small things! Another fav thing is armor. I’ve just recently started with building but it’s amazing. To me it’s important that we help each other and especially help out beginners. We should welcome them with open arms.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I loved the Legend of Zelda and dressing up. So for a medieval festival, I wanted to be Link. Then I discovered the cosplay community through magazines.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I don’t see it as a real career. A fun hobby and maybe I get good enough to be invited as a guest one day and guide beginners but definitely not as a full-time job.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
Usually, I make them a “hybrid” haha. I make most of it but if I can alter a simple shirt for it, I’ll do it. A shirt is usually even cheaper than the material itself!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It depends! Easy ones are done in a week… others, like Mercy, take some months. You can’t really name one-time span for each cosplay since they’re all so different.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Female Hawke! She’s my favorite Dragon Age character and I loooove her sarcastic personality and especially her mage version!! She’s badass, has a dark humor, isn’t a damsel in distress and she also looks SO GOOD <3
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
I always freak out when people recognize me and call themselves my fans. Like ahhhh I’m so honored and I love you all!! I even received fanart already – putting them on my walls. Another experience was when I got to cosplay for UbiSoft. We were a huge Assassin’s Creed group and people freaked out over us <3
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love them! Sadly I rarely find others to cosplay with. But I’m trying to change that 😀
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I am working on Mercy (Overwatch, default skin), Shiro (Voltron), Ciri (Witcher) and will also pick up Moira (Overwatch) soon 🙂
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
“Lewds”… I am honestly no fan of it. If the character dresses sexy, okay – but if it’s absolutely unnecessary and “out of character”… not my cup of tea. Same goes for people who cosplay a character just because they’re cool right now. Shouldn’t we cosplay the characters we LOVE? 🙁
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
Badass, sarcastic characters! I love them when they have dark humor.. or are a bit weird in general.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I love wig styling and figuring out the makeup!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Amazon! Thanks, Amazon Prime, HAHAHA.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
My own, low self-esteem. I still won’t wear anything that reveals my legs :’)
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
That you need a thick skin in life and that you need to work hard by YOURSELF to get somewhere.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Learning by doing! Try new things, don’t be scared of a cosplay. 😀
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It grew and got less personal. Some are way too focused on likes, fame, and attention.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
A Leonardo suit like from the 1990 TMNT movies. It’s my huge goal to make one of these ;__;
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Not really, but I always try not to spend much.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Growth. Happiness. Meeting friends with similar interests.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Unless I don’t lose interest myself I don’t see myself stopping too soon 😀
