About LadyHawkeye Cosplay
My name is Taylor or LadyHawkeye Cosplay! I am 21 and I am currently going to college! I live on the east coast of the US and I try to go to as many conventions as I can, being a college student and all.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I watched a YouTube show called Demyx Time by Parle Productions. They really inspired me!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I currently do it just for fun. I wish that I could have a future career in cosplaying but currently, where I am at financially and academically, I cannot pursue it. Maybe one day!
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I do both. While I love making my own costumes, they don’t always end up the way I want them to be. I always find mistakes in my own work. If I buy a cosplay, however, I can never find really anything to complain about and I absolutely love wearing them. So I do both!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It really depends on the cosplay. If it is a more detailed cosplay, it will probably take me around 3 weeks to a month. If it is more of a simple cosplay up to two weeks. I have gotten a cosplay done in a week though!
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
I think my favorite has to be Mockingbird from Marvel comics. I commissioned someone to do a whole body suit for me, which I have never done before, and I made my props. The suit fits perfectly and it all just looks amazing. It makes me really happy!
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My most memorable experience was wearing a costume that I made completely by myself and having a photo shoot done with my best friend. A lot of the people who were at the convention that I first wore this cosplay at knew who I was and it got me really excited!
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love them and I partake in them regularly. Unfortunately, my group has run into some obstacles lately and we really haven’t been able to come together as a group and make a full group cosplay in a while.
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I really want to finish my Princess Mononoke cosplay. I have also been devoting a lot of my time to paying Overwatch and I definitely want to do a cosplay from that soon.
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
Within the cosplay community, there are a lot of different types of people. There are some people who have no issue showing off their body, which I have no problem with! However, a lot of people try to shut them down or say that they are “asking for it” and calling them names. I have had someone call me a name for wearing my Mockingbird cosplay simply because it was form fitting. I do not think that this should be in the community. We should pick each other up and support one another, not put them down and shame them.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I typically cosplay from video games or anime. I have done a book cosplay before as well as comics and movies. I do it all! It really depends on whether or not I connect to a character.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
Attending cons has to be my absolute favorite part of it all. Getting to see everyone else’s hard work and amazing costume while also showing off what you did or ordered. It is an amazing experience.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I go to JoAnne Fabric Store most of the time if I need material… However, the best place to look is Goodwill or any other thrift store.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
I am not as skinny or as beautiful as I would hope. It is something that I deal with personally, however, when I put on some costumes (like my Mockingbird cosplay) it makes me very self-conscious.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Do not care what other people think. This is your cosplay, your body, your ideas, your fun. Do not let anyone else ruin that!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Make sure that you are kinda courteous to other cosplayers. Treat them how you would want to be treated.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It has become more accepting over time. When I first started cosplaying, no one around me really knew what it was and made fun of me for “playing dress up”. Now, people think that it is really cool! I have made so many friends from it.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
A working Mercy cosplay. With light up wings, an accurate staff, an accurate looking pistol… the whole deal!
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Of course. I typically cannot go over 200$ if I am buying a cosplay. If I am making it, I probably would try not to go over 100$. It all depends on what the cosplay is but yes, I do.
What does cosplay mean to you?
It means the world to me. Honestly, it helped me open up as a person. It helped me get through a very difficult time in my life. It allows me to be creative when I have no other outlet. It makes me… well, me!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
If the community got too toxic. If it gets to the point where no one ever has fun anymore, then I will quit.
