About Avocado Cosplay
My name ist Annie and I am located in Berlin Germany. I am working as an engineer and I don’t like to talk about my age XD I am a super nerd and love manga and comics since my early childhood. I love traveling to japan and I am currently learning japanese for a few months and wanna pass the JLPT in the next years.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I think it was around 2002. I am not quite sure anymore. Honestly, I started cosplay in primary school without knowing a thing like cosplay exists. My first costume was Rinoa from Final Fantasy 8.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I am definitely cosplaying just for fun.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I only make characters I love a lot and mean something to me from scratch. I don’t mind buying cosplays.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
Really depends on the costume. I remember times where I took months to finish a costume.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Nezumi (No.6) and Super Sailor Moon
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
I participated in World Cosplay Summit 2008 as a representative for Germany.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love them. That’s all cosplay is about to me: hanging out with my friends.
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
There’s nothing to finish this year anymore. But I am looking forward to doing my cosplays next year. Some of my planned characters are Emilia (Re: Zero), Kenma (Haikyuu), Joker (Persona 5)…
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
Definitely, divisive topics are slut-shaming or body shaming. I am a really open-minded person and I don’t care about body types and I really enjoy sexy cosplay (or porn). I don’t get why people have so much hate for chubbier cosplayers or cosplayers who sell their sexy cosplay photos. It’s simply not their business. If they don’t like it they should just go on with whatever they like more, but seriously stop the hate. Cosplay is a really cool and creative hobby and we all should enjoy the fact that cosplay is a possibility to express ourselves in a lot of different ways and facets. Amen.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I have the most fun trying different character types ranges from sexy, tough, cute to feminine and I also super enjoy crossplay.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I like the photoshoots and hanging out with friends in the finished costume.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I order most stuff online but we also have a really large material store in Berlin called Modulor.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
I don’t really remember any obstacle. I quit cosplay after the WCS 2008 for some time because I started working and my life changed a lot. Meanwhile, I focused on cosplay photography and found a new passion. So I never stayed away for real from cosplay, but I just started again because I am not myself without cosplay – It took me a while to realize that.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
We are all different. Don’t judge, understand instead. And that Life is too short to waste your time on people who don’t respect, appreciate, and value you.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
I love that the community has gotten so much bigger and that you can buy stuff like wigs so much easier than 10 years ago. I also feel like cosplay is much more accepted by society nowadays.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Wow, that’s a hard question to me because my cosplay wishes never were unreachable. I can’t think of a cosplay I only could do with a lot of money…
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
No, I don’t. If it’s more expensive it just takes me longer to finish it.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Cosplay is life 🙂
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
I don’t think there is anything that would make me stop cosplaying, since I am cosplaying for years now.
