About Sumire Cosplay
My name is Belen. I’m a physics student from Madrid, Spain. I’m always reading and trying new things.
How did you first get into cosplay?
A friend told me there was going to be a convention in my city and that we should try cosplaying something. And we did!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
Right now it’s a hobby but I wouldn’t mind making a living out of it
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It depends on the cosplay. Usually 2-3 months
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Yennefer from The Witcher 3
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
The first time I entered an international contest. It was amazing and I learned a lot.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love group cosplays because you get to know a lot of people, but sometimes I get stressed for not disappointing my group
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
The bloodborne doll, but I don’t think I’ll finish it this year
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
You can cosplay just for fun, or you can cosplay for a living. Whatever your reason to cosplay is, we shouldn’t discriminate people for their physique, gender or race. Let people cosplay what they love. Listen and respect.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I love strong female characters!
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
My favorite part is photo shoots. I always have so much fun posing!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I’m a student so I don’t have a lot of money. So I usually buy every stuff from one different store (so I can save money hahaha)
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
I have learned everything I know by myself so the process of learning new things is always tough
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Do whatever you really love. It’s going to be expensive and it’s going to be hard.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Love what you do. Be critic with yourself but don’t be tough.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
Now the cosplayers we help each other more. We make tutorials, explain how we do everything…
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Big sister from Bioshock
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
No. I spend what I need.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Right now it’s what makes me happy. Thanks to cosplay I have met my best friends, I have something that relaxes me and distracts me from college pressure.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Not right now
