Kickstarter Hot Picks – December 1-15, 2017

Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. For the first half of 2017, 24% of the money raised by successful projects on Kickstarter was from the Tabletop Games category. No doubt that Kickstarter has been a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.

In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, we go on a dungeon crawling adventure, play golf on Mars, build miniature wooden trees, climb mountains, and do battle in World War II.

One Deck Dungeon – Digital Tabletop Game*

*My Kickstarter Backing Pick for December 2017

One Deck Dungeon is the hit roguelike adventure from Asmadi Games that captures all the fun of a dungeon crawl in a single deck of cards. Shuffle the deck, then battle with monsters, claim your loot, and continue deeper until you defeat the boss.

Handelabra Games, creator of digital tabletop games like Sentinels of the Multiverse and Bottom of the 9th, is bringing this tabletop adventure to Steam. The Dungeon Crawler Pledge of $10 or more gets 1 Steam Key for One Deck Dungeon and your name in the credits. Add $5 more to get all the items added to the Treasure Chest (aka stretch goals) over the campaign.

Due to popular demand, there is also a plan to launch the game on iPad and Android tablets within one month of the Steam 1.0 launch. The new Mobile Dungeon backer level is $1 and officially registers your desire to see One Deck Dungeon come to mobile. Furthermore, each mobile backer brings the release of the mobile version one hour earlier, so it could potentially launch at the same time as on Steam.

One Deck Dungeon is a favorite in our house. We have also backed the Kickstarter for the stand-alone expansion, Forest of Shadows, earlier this year.

All or nothing. This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Friday, December 1, 2017. Project has reached its goal and is currently 134% funded.

Stumped: A Deck-building Game with Buildable Wooden Trees

Combining the elegance of deck-building with four miniature wooden trees and some party flare, Stumped is the ultimate hybrid!

Stumped adds a huge twist to the traditional deck-building game by combining the elegance of deck-building with buildable miniature wooden trees. They have taken the all-card approach for something completely original: miniature wooden trees made of actual wood, adding some tangible charm to the deck-building style that we all know and love.

Stumped: A Deck-building Game with Buildable Wooden Trees

The task is simple: turn your pile of dirt into a 10 leaf tree before your neighbors do. But actually doing this can get a bit tricky, with a huge variety of 165 different cards, ranging from some downright nasty attack cards to more growth-focused and defensive cards. Every game has a fresh set of challenges, opportunities, and strategies, like investing your resources in a protective garden fence, planting weeds to destroy your neighbors’ trees, or grafting leaves from your neighbors’ plants to improve your own.

Stumped is for 2-4 players, but you can play up to 5-8 players by combining two copies of the game. The playing time ranges 30-60 minutes, and it is recommended for ages 12+.

A pledge of $30 will get you one copy of Stumped, and $58 will get you that second copy to increase the number of players.

All or nothing. This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wednesday, December 6, 2017. Project has reached its goal and is currently 269% funded.

Mountaineers – A 3D Board Game

Can you avoid bad weather, stay on route, and out climb other players on the mountain? Can you earn enough climbing points to be known as the best of all?

Mountaineers is a 3D board game from Massif Games. When designer Corey Wright was hiking in the French Alps, he was inspired to create a board game that not only looked like a real mountain, but also was a different mountain every time it was played. Mountaineers was the result.

The “board” is an 18-inch-tall spinning board game with hundreds of mountain combinations and components.

Attack your enemies where they least expect and crush their national morale. Strive onward to capture the enemy capitals and secure victory!

BoxThrone – The Modular Board Game Shelving System

The Box Throne, created by Dan Blacklock of Cloud Puncher Games, is the first ever made-for-board-games storage system. This is an obvious want and need for board gamers, as the project was fully funded in 5 hours!

The Box Throne is a modular shelving system that lets you store every game flat. Storing games flat is a great idea, but the only way to do that with existing bookcases is to stack games – putting heavy games on top of heavy games, increasing the wear and tear.  Storing games flat means the pieces come out of the box the same way they went in. With the BoxThrone, there are no jumbled cards and pieces falling out of trays. No extra baggies needed. With the BoxThrone, you can avoid them all together by having every game on its own shelf.

BoxThrone - The Modular Board Game Shelving System
BoxThrone – The Modular Board Game Shelving System

The BoxThrone shelving system is fully modular. You can add or remove BoxThrones as your board game collection grows or shrinks. Stack 5 BoxThrones to make a 15-foot tower or build them wide for a seamless wall of board game shelves. BoxThrones interlock and bind together, so you can easily fill any wall space. With its adaptable design, the BoxThrone is the perfect fit for any space and any collection size. Tall or short, all box heights are welcome in the BoxKingdom. Pack your BoxThrone with games of any size thanks to the adjustable shelf slots.

The BoxThrone is flexible in how you display your board games. You can store one game per shelf to make an elegant tower of games, or you can store 2-5 games per shelf to maximize space capacity. There are also 40cm (16.75 inch) tall ShortThrones, which are half-size BoxThrones that give you a little added flexibility in designing your dream board game display. Each BoxThrone is capable of holding up to 20 games. Add bridge shelves between two Double BoxThrones and the potential capacity goes up to 120 games.

The BoxThrone columns are constructed using a lightweight yet extremely durable metallic compound. This means it’ll handle the immense weight of your games and withstand the test of time. Board games are heavy. Storing piles of board games on most wooden shelves will cause them to sag over time.

The BoxThrone can be customized with add-ons. Crystal clear acrylic toppers added to your BoxThrone turn it into a miniature display case. 60cm wide wire shelf add-ons are a storage solution for your vintage games, oversized boxes, and extra-long classic games that just don’t seem to fit anywhere. Slide-out drawers sit on rails that slot into the BoxThrone’s columns, giving you an easy, attractive stowaway option for all your extra bits.

The BoxKnight pledge of $79 is for one BoxThrone in your choice of colors. The BoxPrince pledge of $139 is for a Double BoxThrone to build a magnificent tower of board games. The BoxDuke pledge of $149 a flexible pack of two single BoxThrones, which can be stacked and unstacked to suit your space needs.

There are several combinations and add-ons that make for a truly customizable, high-quality gaming storage solution for any need.

All or nothing. This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thursday, December 14, 2017. Project has reached its goal and is currently 1262% funded.
