A new drama series based on the Conan the Barbarian books by Robert E. Howard is in development as an Amazon series. According to Deadline.com, “The project hails from Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, Games of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, Fargo and The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield, Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content.”

Conan the Barbarian - Frank FrazettaCondal, who has a “personal obsession” with the original Conan stories (which date back to 1932), is the creator and writer of the new series. Sapochnik is slated to direct.

Said Condal via Twitter, “This news is more than two years in the making. It’s been a long road but a rewarding one. Very excited to have the chance to beam my favorite Cimmerian into your homes.”

Amazon is hoping Conan will be their fantasy-drama answer to HBO’s Game of Thrones. This announcement follows Amazon’s announcement that they will also produce a Lord of the Rings series, which will be a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.

Condal’s version of Conan the Barbarian will take the story back to Howard’s classic story, with Conan “driven out of his tribal homelands and forced to wander a dangerous world while searching for purpose in a land that sees him as nothing more than a mindless savage.”

Some Twitter reactions:

Jared Logan, writer for “The Late Late Show” on CBS, tweeted, “There’s going to be a Conan the Barbarian series on and I think I made it happen with wishing.”

“I never thought anything would fill the hole left in my heart by the cancellation of Legend of Conan, but I suppose this will do,” tweeted Carl Beringer.
