About Celkae Cosplay
I’m Celkae Cosplay. In real life, I’m a product designer from Nantes, France.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I made some friends who were cosplaying. I took pictures of them and I wanted to make costumes of my own too because I love crafting stuff.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
It’s just for fun, it’s my hobby.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I make them all by myself from scratch. I never ask for commissions. I’m very proud to say I made something on my own.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
I’m not very fast and a perfectionist. I can spend 300 / 400 hours on a cosplay, especially when I have to learn a new technic.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Bastet from the video game SMITE is my favourite cosplay because I love Egyptian mythology and the variety of technics I had to use. There is sewing with a lot of colourful fabrics and I used foam to make her armor and jewels. I also love my paws even if I’m 1,90 m with them on.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
The best memory was when I met my favourite comics’ author because he loves the cosplay I made of his character.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
It’s fun to cosplay with friends and to have many characters of the same universe.
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I want to finish a suit of Ciri from The Witcher.
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
Some cosplayers love to sexualize their character and others think it’s a problem. People who buy their cosplay are looked down by ones who make their cosplay. For me, everyone is a cosplayer when they dress up like their favourite character and however they interpret it.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I like fighters, they have accessories and weapons that are fun to play with.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
The painting of the armor pieces is my favourite part of the cosplay. I also like meeting others cosplayer and talking about technics we used.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Fabric and hardware stores. I like hacking stuff I find rather than using expensive materials.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
I’m self-taught in sewing. I learned it with books and the internet.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
I don’t think I have been changed by it. It feels pretty natural for me to do cosplay
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
You have to never give up, it takes time and a lot of failures.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
In France the community is young and it’s growing up. It is becoming more and more widespread.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I want to make a very realistic Khaajit from The Elder Scrolls
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
400€ max which is spread over the year.
What does cosplay mean to you?
You bring a fictional character to life
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
The time, cosplay takes a lot of time.
