Hi there! My name is Merrin, but in the cosplay world, I am known as MezzaMind. I am 21 years old and have been cosplaying since 2015. I grew up watching Stargate and Doctor Who, playing video games for hours on end and pretty much just goofed around. League of Legends and Overwatch are the games I play a lot but my all time favourite game is Borderlands 2. I am also a huge fan of comic books and have recently been getting back into anime after ignoring it for a couple of years.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I began cosplaying after making Jinx’s Pow Pow gun from League of Legends for fun
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I would say somewhere in the middle, I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t enjoy it but I think most cosplayers would like to make a living from it because it is a lot of hard work
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I prefer to make my cosplays, I have bought a few zentai suits in the past but my real passion lies in prop making, I love making big props
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
I usually tend to pace myself so that I don’t stress out but they usually take 1-3 months depending on the size of the build
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
My favourite cosplay is probably the one I am nearly done with, Ambitious Elf Jinx from League of Legends
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My most memorable experience as a cosplayer was at a convention earlier this year, I had gone all dressed as Animated Batman Series Harley Quinn and this group of about 5 girls all with their hairs in pigtails and wearing Harley Quinn shirts came running up to me, screaming. They saw me from across the convention and raced over to come take a picture with me. I remember how excited they were and how big the smiles on their faces were and it always reminds me why I cosplay, I cosplay to feel that joy and to spread that joy to others
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I have never done a group cosplay before but I have always wanted to try it out
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I am currently working on 2 cosplays, Black Wing Armour Erza Scarlet from Fairytail and Ambitious Elf Jinx from League of Legends
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I think the biggest problem is everyone feels that a cosplayer should so the cosplay a “different” way or don’t pick that cosplay because you’re too fat/thin. I think it is silly to tell someone what they should and shouldn’t do based on trivial things such as one’s body or crafting
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
Definitely video games, I am always wanting to build more and more of my favourite characters
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
My favourite part of the progress would be the painting, I used to paint a lot before I started cosplaying so it really takes me back to my roots
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I usually go to Bunning’s and Spotlight but things such as EVA foam or Worbla I have to go to specialty stores or buy online
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
My biggest obstacle has always been my confidence, I never feel like my cosplays are ever good enough but with friends, family, and fans reassuring me, I am managing to overcome it
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
I’ve learned to ignore all the negativity that some people spread and focus on making myself happy and keep pushing forward for the people who do actually want to see
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Making mistakes is okay. Don’t stress, it’s okay to remake things, it’s okay if the first or second or third tries aren’t what you want, keep going until you are happy with it. I remade my Taiga Aisaka blazer 6 times because each time I wasn’t happy with it and at the end, I got a result that I was happy with
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
The cosplay community has grown so much over the past few years, with that comes good and bad, there are parts of cosplay that I try to stay away from as to escape the drama but the majority of the community is very loving and accepting
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I love to make cosplays for my sister and I and the one I have always wanted to make is Annie and Tibbers from League of Legends
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
I don’t set a budget, I try to keep my costs down as much as possible but there are always going to be things you can’t foresee
What does cosplay mean to you?
Cosplay means a lot to me, I was always a shut-in, addicted to sci-fi and video games, never really had that many friends but cosplay has brought me, friends, cosplay has made me go out and interact and it has made me see the real fun in life
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
I would continue to try cosplay always but there are things such a money that could force me to stop cosplaying
