Vandaleen Cosplay

How did you first get into cosplay?

I watched anime series since kindergarten and became interested in looking like my favorite characters when I became older. One of my friends asked me to join her on a cosplay convention and I had so much fun that I continued cosplaying.

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

To me, it’s my hobby. My grandfather always said I should keep what I like the most as a hobby and the thing I like the second most as a job so that I won’t get tired of the thing I like the most. I think he’s right about that so I just do it for fun.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

It always depends on the cosplay. If I can make it myself I do it if I can make half of it I will do it but sometimes my skills are not enough for certain cosplays so I just buy them and change them up to make them look at least a little bit different.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

This also depends on the cosplay but I need at least one month to finish a cosplay. Sometimes it’s also hard to find time for it during the week and I can only work on it during weekends.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

My favorite was D.Va from Overwatch so far because I didn’t put as much effort in it as in other cosplays in order to look good because she looks a bit like me. It just felt super comfortable this way.

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

I think I will never forget the way people stare at me when I wear cosplays but I got used to it. What really made me happy are compliments and nice words of other that made me realize that the work and effort I put into my cosplays was worth it.

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I really love group cosplays. I think it makes cosplaying a lot more fun but all of my cosplayer friends have really different tastes so it rarely happens.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I’m currently working on my Asuna Yuuki (SAO) cosplay and plan to also finish the Inori Yuzuriha (Guilty Crown) red battle dress and feather dress this year.

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

I’m not sure about this one. I didn’t have any problems so far.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

I’m generally in love with tsundere characters because I can find myself within them. I also love strong characters or creepy ones because they always make me feel excited to cosplay

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

I like every part of cosplay but my favorite part is actually wearing it for the first time and realizing everything worked out and it was worth it. Also, conventions are an amazing part of cosplay because you are able to meet so many talented people that inspire you to do better.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

That also depends on the cosplay but eBay helped me out a lot.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

There were many in the beginning and there still are some. Many people don’t think highly of it so I heard many bad words. Also, I didn’t know anything about wigs, makeup, lenses or sewing when I started. It was really difficult to learn so many new things and make them work. Sometimes it just didn’t work out and I was a bit discouraged but the only way to overcome something like this is to try it again and again.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

I think it’s to have faith in the things you love to do and to not listen to others who don’t understand it.

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

I think if you’re new it’s always best to start with cosplaying a character you really like but also one that isn’t too difficult to cosplay. I saw many new cosplayers getting discouraged by trying to cosplay really difficult stuff at first because it didn’t work the way they wanted it to. Also, you shouldn’t be shy to ask others for help or advice. I think asking others helped me the most.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

I think if you’re new it’s always best to start with cosplaying a character you really like but also one that isn’t too difficult to cosplay. I saw many new cosplayers getting discouraged by trying to cosplay really difficult stuff at first because it didn’t work the way they wanted it to. Also, you shouldn’t be shy to ask others for help or advice. I think asking others helped me the most.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

I would love to do the devil version of Mercy (Overwatch) but I won’t ever have enough money for that so it will stay a dream.

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

Not really, but I try to get it as cheap as possible of course.

What does cosplay mean to you?

To me, cosplay is like my first love.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

No there isn’t.
